Vermont Gas proposes new rate decreases

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont Gas is recommending a 3.3-percent rate decrease for its approximately 50,000 customers in Franklin and Chittenden counties, a reduction that — if OK’d by the state’s Public Service Board (PSB) — will also apply to the few hundred Middlebury and Vergennes clients the company hopes to patch into its natural gas network this year via its new pipeline extension into Addison County.

Vergennes flagged for sewer overflow

MONTPELIER — The cities of Rutland and Vergennes released more than 1 million gallons of untreated wastewater into Lake Champlain tributaries last week, an event that the EPA acknowledges violates federal law.

State and local officials say they’re pursuing efforts that will over time eliminate such incidents, but funding for needed improvements in those communities and others is sparse.

Bill would trigger hospital closures

MONTPELIER — Two lawmakers from the Burlington area have introduced a bill that would provide consumers and regulators with more information about the market power of health systems.

Sens. Tim Ashe, D/P-Chittenden, and Michael Sirotkin, D-Chittenden, have introduced S.245, legislation that would require hospitals to notify state regulators and their patients every time the hospital buys a new independent practice.

Ferrisburgh plan hearing on tap

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh selectboard will take the town’s next step in what has been a three-year effort to update the Ferrisburgh Town Plan.

At 6:30 p.m. next Tuesday, the selectboard will hold its first, and possibly only, hearing on the document at town offices, which will focus on how the town should grow along Route 7.

“There was some expansion of the Route 7 corridor for mixed uses,” said planning commission chairman Bob Beach, “so there was more opportunity for business growth along Route 7 in a mixed variety.”

Keeping a viable downtown on tap in Middlebury, Feb. 21 and 25

MIDDLEBURY — The community action group Neighbors, Together hosted two forums earlier this month to engage community members in identifying values that should be protected during the upcoming rail and bridges project in downtown Middlebury. A second round of forums is coming up on Feb. 21 and 25.

The values that were identified as most critical by those at the first forums were:

• Accessibility, including parking, pedestrian and cycling access; emergency service access; and way-finding signage;

UVM clinics to offer budget help to farmers

MIDDLEBURY — University of Vermont Extension farm business educators will be available to meet individually with Vermont farmers at several locations in late February and March to provide assistance with farm budgets, update balance sheets or address other financial matters.

Sessions are 60 to 90 minutes and will be tailored to the financial planning needs of the individual farm. The cost is $25. Appointments may be scheduled at www.regonline.com/2016budgetclinics.

Small farmers to voice concerns Feb. 24

MONTPELIER — Rural Vermont will host its first of three Small Farm Action Days at the Vermont Statehouse on Wednesday, Feb. 24. The events, also planned for March 30 and April 26, will provide farmers the opportunity to inform and educate legislators about the unique challenges small farms face in meeting their communities’ growing demand for high-quality, local food, while serving as good stewards of Vermont’s working landscape.

Farms and businesses helped by grants

MONTPELIER — A state investment fund credited with helping a growing group of businesses and farms was put on full display last week at the Statehouse.

Lawmakers and state officials had front row seats at the third annual report of the Working Lands Enterprise Initiative. Established by the Legislature in 2012, the initiative comprises a fund and a board to oversee grants and investments in Vermont forestry and agriculture businesses. To date, the fund has pumped more than $3 million into over 100 different projects.

VUHS Music Department to host a cabaret, Feb. 25

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Union High School Music Department presents a Black & White Cabaret on Thursday, Feb. 25, at 6:30 p.m. in the VUHS middle school gymnasium.

Scrumptious desserts and beverages will be served while beautiful music is performed. The musical lineup features student solos, combos, the Commodore Jazz Ensemble and the Commodore Singers

There is a $5 suggested donation. Proceeds benefit Music Department scholarships.

Maiden Vermont to hold annual Guest Night, Feb. 25

SALISBURY — Maiden Vermont, central Vermont’swomen’s barbershop chorus, is holding its annual Guest Night on Thursday, Feb. 25, at 7 p.m. at the Salisbury elementary school. Women who like to sing, can sing on pitch and can carry their own part are invited to come, make music, and meet and mingle with members of the chorus.

The evening begins with light dancing warm-ups. After some vocal warm-ups, the group will rehearse under its energetic director, Lindi Bortney.
