ACTR and Randolph bus companies seek to join forces

MIDDLEBURY — Two local transportation companies — one that serves Addison County and the other that serves the Orange County and North Windsor County — are looking to merge.

Middlebury-based Addison County Transit Resources (ACTR) was called in by the Vermont Agency of Transportation to help Randolph-based Stagecoach Transportation Services (STSI) in January 2014 when STSI’s executive director stepped down

Feb. 4 fundraiser to aid Parent-Child Center

MIDDLEBURY — After a four-month hiatus from performing, local band The Horse Traders is teaming up with Two Brothers Tavern and Drop-In Brewery for a fundraiser to benefit the Addison County Parent-Child Center on Saturday, Feb. 4, from 8 p.m. until midnight. The night will feature the band’s wide range of music from modern pop and oldies to classic rock, soul, and country.

Davydov and Fanning celebrate 40 years with concert

ADDISON COUNTY — Middlebury-based Dieuwke Davydov and Diana Fanning are celebrating 40 years as a duo this year. The pair will embark on their eighth concert tour of Europe this April. Before they go, the cello/piano duo and will unveil their program at Chandler Center for the Arts in Randolph on Saturday, Feb. 4, at 7:30 p.m. There will be a meet-the-artists reception in the gallery following the performance.

Shoreham library to benefit from dessert contest and concert

SHOREHAM — Shoreham’s Friends of the Platt Memorial library will host a Benefit Concert and Maple Dessert Contest on Saturday, Feb. 11, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Music will be performed by Brandon’s Nelson Bandella. Ethan, Emily and Isaiah Nelson along with banjo powerhouse John Farnsworth will rock the library with their own special brand of folky Americana.

Free workshop will help family members cope with mental illness

MIDDLEBURY — The National Alliance on Mental Illness of Vermont (NAMI Vermont) will offer the Mental Illness and Recovery workshop for family members, peers, professionals and community members who want to learn more about mental illness and recovery. This daylong workshop will be facilitated at CSAC, 89 Main Street in Middlebury, on Saturday, Feb. 18. Registration is required for this event.

Connor Homes founder seeking to reopen business in new spot

MIDDLEBURY — Connor Homes founder Mike Connor confirmed on Tuesday he is sizing up a new Middlebury location in which to rekindle the business after negotiations to reopen the enterprise at its longtime Route 7 plant failed.

This news is at least a temporary setback for the 63 laid-off employees who helped make Connor Homes’ specialty colonial reproduction “kit” homes.

Program gives teens a platform to push back against addiction

MIDDLEBURY — Actor Jeremy Holm was driving from a gig in Stowe to his Vergennes home last September when his radio popped with some news he couldn’t ignore.

It was a story about the police chief in East Liverpool, Ohio, who had posted a photo on Facebook depicting two adult heroin addicts passed out in front seats of their vehicle, with their 4-year-old boy asleep in the backseat.

“The chief put that picture up because he needed help,” Holm recalled. “He said, ‘You can’t arrest yourself out of this problem.’”

Local residents join Montpelier crowd: Women, backers flood state capital to show solidarity

MONTPELIER — Greta Hardy-Mittell, a junior at Middlebury Union High School, stood on the steps of the Vermont Statehouse last Saturday afternoon counting the speakers left until it was her turn. Clutching a folded paper copy of a self-authored poem, the nerves she had quieted that morning began to resurface.

The sign-waving, pussy-hat-wearing crowd before her — expected to be only a few thousand — was estimated at 15,000-20,000 by Vermont State Police, making it the largest protest ever held in Vermont, according to organizers.

Addison County folks take stand at March in Washington, D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — “I just kept crying,” East Middlebury resident Joanna Colwell said recounting her experience at the Women’s March on Washington this past Saturday. “I’ve never been in a crowd that big, and I’ve been in some big crowds.”

Big was a word used by many of the Addison County residents who went to the huge rally on the National Mall the day after President Trump’s inauguration.
