Preschoolers kept Deborah Angier young during 33-year career at ANwSU

VERGENNES — Thirty-three years ago, then Addison Northwest Supervisory Union Superintendent Gail Link offered Deborah Angier a yearlong substitute teaching position in the district’s preschool, then operating in the Bixby Library basement on Main Street, Vergennes.

Angier, a Randolph native whose family had moved to Vergennes when she was a fourth-grader, had recently earned her degree in elementary education from Trinity College in Burlington, but was considering other options based on her love of the French language.

Heirloom hardwoods get new life at Bristol business

BRISTOL — Vermont Tree Goods — a new Bristol business being launched by sawyer/woodworker/entrepreneur John Monks — was literally born out of the ashes.

A devastating fire on Thanksgiving eve 2010 left Monks and his family with little more than the clothes on their backs.

For Monks, a long-time homebuilder, all that remained of the equipment he had built up over three decades were a few scaffolds.

Leave fawns alone for their safety

MONTPELIER — The Vermont Fish &Wildlife Department says deer fawns are being born this time of year and asks that people avoid disturbing or picking them up.

Most deer fawns are born in late May and the first and second weeks of June, according to Vermont deer biologist Nick Fortin.

Fortin says it is best to keep your distance because the fawn’s mother is almost always nearby. When people see a small fawn alone, they often mistakenly assume it is helpless, lost or needing to be rescued.

Fire school offered training fighting fires around solar arrays

MONTPELIER — Rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) systems present special considerations for firefighters. A workshop held recently at the Vermont Fire Academy in Pittsford provided fire safety instructors with information they can use to teach local firefighters across the state about how to deal with fires on buildings equipped with solar PV systems. The workshop was jointly hosted by the Clean Energy States Alliance, the Vermont Public Service Department, and the Vermont Fire Academy.

Trout connect science, ecology and fun for Lincoln kids

LINCOLN — A biting cold wind and light specklings of May snow could not damper the enthusiasm of the 36 fifth- and sixth-graders of Lincoln Community School who watched their 143 hand-raised brook trout swim free in the New Haven River Monday afternoon. An admiring crowd of fellow students in kindergarten through fourth grade cheered them on.

The trout release was the culminating step in the students’ semester-long study of ecology, through the lens of brook trout as an indicator species.

Bristol Elementary opts for experience, picks veteran as principal

BRISTOL — At its Tuesday night meeting, the Bristol Elementary School board named long-time educator and administrator Kevin Robinson the school’s next principal.

“We were really lucky to have two such strong candidates,” said board Chair Elin Melchior, speaking of Robinson and co-finalist Justin Bouvier. “The feedback from the different sessions that they did was very positive for both of them. They both presented very well.

Brandon doctor's practice now treating opiate addicts

BRANDON — Quietly and methodically, a local medical practice has begun treating Brandon opiate addicts.

Dr. George Fjeld, Dr. John Dick and Dr. Kim Kurak at the Brandon Medical Center secured the necessary licensing and funding to prescribe the opiate treatment drug Suboxone to addicts who are existing patients within the practice.

The UD-3 school board on Tuesday unanimously endorsed the hiring of Leicester resident and current Rutland Middle School Principal Kristin Holsman-Francoeur as the new top administrator for MUMS.

Meet the Chef: Starrin Ricupero from 51 Main

Starrin Ricupero lives in Vergennes with his wife Christina Canyio, whose favorite dish is Ricupero’s Brazilian Shrimp Stew. Ricupero was inspired by Brazil when he created this recipe over eight years ago, and has kept it a secret until today. “It was time to let it go,” Ricupero said in an interview last week.
