Police seize 28 animals in Ferrisburgh, cite three for animal cruelty

FERRISBURGH — Three Addison County residents are due to answer animal cruelty charges in court Wednesday after police raided a Ferrisburgh property and rescued 28 animals from poor living conditions.

Ferrisburgh residents Katherine Ferguson, 61, and Thomas Ferguson, 51, along with Bridport resident Roxanne Clark, 36, are due to answer charges of animal cruelty in Addison Superior Court, Criminal Division, on Oct. 18 at 12:30 p.m.

Renovated Middlebury shelter ready to serve more homeless guests

MIDDLEBURY — The Charter House Coalition (CHC) is putting the finishing touches on a first round of repairs to the interior of its warming shelter at 27 North Pleasant St. that will allow the facility to house and better feed more homeless guests this winter than in years past.

Town criticizes tree cutting near Middlebury airport

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury officials will ask a state-hired contractor to correct what they said was a poorly executed plan to harvest around 30 pine trees in the town right-of-way along a portion of Forest Ridge Drive, a project aimed at improving visibility for pilots using the southern approach to the Middlebury State Airport runway.

Middlebury Director of Operations Dan Werner last month drew up a series of conditions for the harvest, including that:

•  The trees be removed at ground level, with stumps left in the ground.

Developer proposes 14-unit development in Vergennes; all homes to be energy efficient

VERGENNES — The developer whose proposal for a six-unit energy-efficient Planned Unit Development (PUD) on Green Street was in July denied by the Vergennes Development Review Board now has his eye on a 14-unit PUD on a 7.43-acre Comfort Hill parcel in the Little City.

Vergennes will get five new lighted crosswalk signs

VERGENNES — City Manager Mel Hawley told the Vergennes City Council members at their meeting last Tuesday that Vergennes had been awarded a $37,500 grant through a Vermont Agency of Transportation program that will fund pedestrian-triggered flashing lights at five city crosswalks.

By next spring those lights should be installed along Main Street at its intersection with Panton Road, Macdonough Drive and Maple Street, and at Vergennes City Hall.

Vermont Coverts receives $100,000 to help landowners promote wildlife conservation

VERGENNES — The Vergennes-based organization Vermont Coverts: Woodlands for Wildlife has recently received a $100,000 gift from the Charles B. Ewing 2007 Charitable Lead Annuity Trust. This donation was made in support of Vermont Coverts’ work to help educate landowners about stewarding their woodland properties for wildlife conservation.
