Granville post office closing, piece of community is lost

Posted on January 18, 2016 |
By Evan Johnson

GRANVILLE — After the close of business hours this Friday, post office box users in the town of Granville will have to go elsewhere to pick up their mail.

Since 1963, the U.S. Postal Service has leased one room in a Route 100 home next to the general store to serve as the post office; it hosts 50 P.O. boxes used by Granville residents. Citing health issues, landlords Alice “Pete” and William Parrish made an emergency suspension of the lease late last month, forcing the post office to vacate.

MIDDLEBURY — ID-4 school directors are seeking voter support for a 2016-2017 Mary Hogan Elementary School budget of $7,391,279, a plan that reflects a 9.08 percent increase in spending, but a much smaller 1.44 percent bump in the homestead education property tax rate.

And Middlebury school directors note that the overall education property tax rate for local students in grades pre-K through 12 is expected to decrease by 4.08 percent, due in part to a substantial increase in students that will in turn net the community more state assistance.

VERGENNES — Vergennes residents will get a chance on Town Meeting Day to vote on the plan backed by the city council to reroute half of the truck traffic that now goes through Vergennes around the city via Routes 17 and 7.

The city council on Tuesday agreed to put that question on the March 1 ballot in response to a concern raised by Alderman Mike Daniels, who noted a majority of the council had a potential conflict of interest in supporting the proposal.

MIDDLEBURY — Local entrepreneur Tony Neri is proposing to build a new, 18-hole miniature golf course behind his A&W Restaurant on Route 7 South, as well as a new, 20,000-square-foot warehouse building in the town’s industrial park that would be tailored to up-and-coming businesses specializing in organic products.
