Mount Abe offers lower tax rates in third try to get budget passed

BRISTOL — If voters in the five towns of the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union approve of the latest spending proposal for Mount Abraham Union High School, residents in those towns will see the high school portion of their education property tax rates go down, according to district officials.

The vote on the proposed $13,947,738 spending plan for fiscal year 2015-2016 will take place Tuesday, June 9, in Bristol, Monkton, Starksboro, Lincoln and New Haven. The proposal reflects a 1.02 percent decrease compared to the current spending plan.

Middlebury College President Ron Liebowitz reflects on town-gown legacy

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College President Ron Liebowitz hopes to be recalled as someone who during his 11 years in office worked to fortify the institution’s relationship with the town of Middlebury — not only through financial contributions to many community projects, but also by helping to redefine the tenor of town-gown conversations.

Liebowitz — who will soon make way for incoming President Laurie Patton — took some time on Monday to chat about the legacy he will leave, specifically as it pertains to town-gown affairs.

Porter plants seeds for long-term health with garden for homeless

MIDDLEBURY — A lot of healing takes place within the walls of Porter Medical Center. But tucked away on a small sliver of the Porter campus lies a resource designed to keep people from needing to tap into hospital services.

The resources in question are two gardens in which fresh vegetables are being planted, tended and eventually harvested for people looking for a healthy diet, and as essential nutrition for people who don’t have enough to eat.

New medical clinic opens its doors in Shoreham; dental care in works

SHOREHAM — It was five years ago that the Shorewell Clinic found itself homeless after a fire consumed its rented space within the former Newton Academy building on Shoreham’s School Street. Shorewell Clinic’s lone physician, Dr. Allan Curtiss, was fortunate enough to find — and relocate his clinic into — new space for rent at 115 Main St.

Last week, Curtiss and the Shorewell Clinic made what is likely to be their last move for many decades — into the new Shorewell Community Health

Lawmakers happy with 2015 session but say work remains to be done

BRIDPORT — The media and political pundits have already graded the 2015 Vermont Legislature on its performance during the recently concluded session.

On Monday, a handful of local lawmakers graded themselves, hinting at a report card that could bear an “A” effort but an “incomplete” on their body of work on the subjects of health care, state budgeting and public education reform.

Mt. Abe Principal Lyman to leave at end of year

BRISTOL — As if the Mount Abraham Union High School Board didn’t have enough on its plate trying to get voter approval for a 2015-2016 budget, the panel recently learned that it is now in the market for a new principal.

Principal Gaynell Lyman confirmed on Monday that she will be leaving the position she has held for just one year in order to pursue another career opportunity.

MIDDLEBURY — Pretty much anyone in Vermont who is interested in getting their hands into the soil and raise a patch of vegetables or flowers in their yard has heard of master gardener Charlie Nardozzi. The plant specialist, who is a regular on Vermont Public Radio and WCAX-TV and in dispatches from the UVM Extension service will be in Middlebury next week.

Nardozzi will be in Middlebury twice this month.

Cow-derived gas project moves forward

SALISBURY — A renewable natural gas project in Salisbury that would convert organic waste and manure from dairy cows to pipeline-quality natural gas and other beneficial products moved a step closer to reality last month.

Dan Smith of Lincoln Renewable Natural Gas, or LincolnRNG, submitted an application for the project to the Vermont Public Service Board on May 11.
