MIDDLEBURY — As newly appointed interim president, Dan Smith has set progressive goals over the next year to help Vermont Technical College better establish its niche in higher education, while attracting a higher number of applicants.

The goals are readily attainable, Smith said, because the college has proven itself as a wise investment for the state and its students, noting that 87 percent of its graduates either get a job in a related field or go on to further their education.

Zoning issue could delay Bristol station

Posted on July 17, 2014 |
By Zach Despart

BRISTOL — The Bristol selectboard on Monday debated how to handle a discrepancy in town zoning maps that could delay the siting of a new firehouse.

A committee charged with researching a prime location for a new firehouse last month recommended to the selectboard that it be built on West Street. The site contains portions of the Bristol Recreation Club and a plot owned by Ed and Suzanne Shepard.

Ways of Seeing: Someday, Vermont may act more Swedish

Posted on July 17, 2014 |
By Rebecca Kneale Gould

This month’s column is a live dispatch from the vast archipelago that lies east of Stockholm. In particular, I am writing from the northernmost island, Arlhoma, where travel is by boat, foot or bicycle. What brought me to Stockholm was an opportunity to visit my old friend, Annica, who lived with my family as an exchange student and whom I haven’t seen in 32 years.

By Addison Independent

BRISTOL — Organizers for the Three Day Stampede say they’ve collected a record number of donations for this year’s event, and they’re looking for more.

“As of today we have collected over five tractor-trailer loads full of everything from furniture to home décor to sporting goods for your shopping pleasure,” founder and organizer Bonita Bedard said in a statement. “Saturday’s drop-offs alone filled a 48-foot trailer, leaving us scrambling to store the remainder of the items.”

Ferrisburgh 2013-14 property transfers

Posted on July 17, 2014 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh selectboard on Tuesday set the town’s tax rates for the 2014-2015 fiscal year, and both residential and non-residential rates, as expected, saw significant increases.

The new overall residential rate is $1.7893, up by about 24 cents from the previous fiscal year rate of $1.5474. Treasurer Garrit Smits reminded the board, and about 10 residents at the town office building, that high per-pupil spending rates are pushing school tax rates higher.

FERRISBURGH — Denecker Chevrolet owner Tom Denecker told the Ferrisburgh selectboard on Tuesday the Act 250 process for his proposed new site on town-owned land at the junction of Routes 7 and 22A has been lengthy, but he has made progress elsewhere toward his proposed $350,000 purchase from the town.

“We have been steadily moving the ball,” Denecker said. “Now there’s a bit of a mire going on.”

Views from the vet: Cows need access to shade, water

We’ve all enjoyed a very nice stretch of weather, particularly special after our long, cold winter. On the farm, the days are spent cutting, drying and baling hay, chopping and piling grass haylage and

monitoring cornfields. While farmers are busy in the fields, farm animals are basking in the summer sun with the rest of us.
