Contract forced on some Otter Valley staff

BRANDON — The Otter Valley United Union School Board and the Rutland Northeast Supervisory Union Board unanimously voted to impose a contract on paraeducators and bus drivers at a joint meeting on June 13.

The move came a year after the

last contract agreement and 10 months of negotiations, fact finding and mediation. An impasse was declared in November.

Each side returned to the table on May 30 to try and settle on an agreement, but the board’s final offer was rejected by the paras and driver’s union members.

Abenaki artists to present their heritage at Maritime Museum this weekend

What does it mean to be an Abenaki in today’s world? What does it mean to be an Indigenous artist? Native identity finds expression in different ways with each generation. A new exhibit at the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum (LCMM), Alnôbak: Wearing Our Heritage, presents wearable art, such as garments, regalia and accessories, by contemporary Abenaki artists, together with photographs and prints that reflect previous generations.

City board to rule on Green Street development in July

VERGENNES — After an April site visit and a three-session public hearing that closed on Monday, the Vergennes Development Review Board will decide next month whether to approve a six-unit Planned Unit Development at 186 Green St. that would feature small, energy-efficient pre-built homes and common-owned land on 1.85 acres.

Vermont State Police Log: Troopers respond to several crashes

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police reported a number of car crashes in the past week, one of which resulted in a drunk driving charge.

On June 14 at around 6:15 p.m. troopers responded to a report of a car crash on Route 7 near Route 17 in New Haven. Police were told the 2002 Subaru Legacy nearly hit another vehicle before striking a guardrail.

Vergennes Police Log: City man accused of aggravated domestic assault

VERGENNES — Vergennes police on Sunday, June 18, arrested a city man for aggravated domestic assault after responding to a complaint about a city apartment. They lodged Russell Hulst, 57, at the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility following the alleged attack.

Police allege Hulst pushed the victim to the floor and leaned on her throat with his right forearm in the presence of her daughter, and said he was scheduled to be arraigned this past Monday.

Middlebury Police Log: MUHS teen cited for mischief

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited a juvenile Middlebury Union High School student for unlawful mischief on campus June 15. School officials allege the 14-year-old student punched a hole in the drywall in the E-wing corridor of MUHS.

Police said they confirmed the incident through security camera footage.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Served court diversion paperwork on a minor who was allegedly in possession of alcohol at a Court Street Extension home on June 11.

Brownell tapped to lead home health agency

MIDDLEBURY — Tim Brownell, R.N., has been tapped as the new Chief Executive Officer and Chief Nursing Office at Addison County Home Health and Hospice (ACHHH). He joined ACHHH on May 8.

Brownell brings more than 25 years of Home Health and Hospice experience in various management roles. Most recently he served as the divisional director of Hospice for Community Health Systems, and prior to that as the vice president of business operations for a large multi-state pediatric and adult home health care company based in New Jersey.

Bristol Police Log: Police week filled with safety, security and fun

BRISTOL — Bristol Police Chief Kevin Gibbs assisted with a “Fun Day” event at Bristol Elementary School on the afternoon of June 8 by blocking off the roadway in front of the school so youngsters could make chalk art on the pavement in front of the school.

Gibbs did not encounter any problems.

Cornwall Fire Department to host annual barbeque this Sunday

CORNWALL — The grills will fire up early for a morning of slow roasting on Sunday, June 25, for the annual Cornwall Volunteer Fire Department chicken barbecue.

Sit-down or take-out dining starts at noon and ends at 2 p.m. The traditional menu of one half-chicken cooked slowly and basted with a secret sauce over open coals, plus sides, remains the same. Hot dogs and hamburgers will also be available.

All proceeds benefit the work of the fire department. The event takes place at the firehouse on Route 30 at the corner with Sperry Road.

Brandon Town Hall to host a 'Night of Comedy'

BRANDON — The Brandon Town Players will perform their spring production, “A Night of Comedy” on Friday, June 23 and Saturday, June 24, at 7:30 p.m. The Brandon Town Hall will be set up cabaret-style with four guests to a table.
