Little City to celebrate Vergennes Day from dawn to dusk

VERGENNES — Vergennes Day celebrates its 33rd year on Saturday, Aug. 23. On the Friday evening before, the event kicks off with a street dance in City Park featuring the music of The Hitmen from 7 to 10 p.m. Vergennes Day, hosted and sponsored by the Addison County Chamber of Commerce and area businesses, is a celebration of city and community and can be enjoyed by all ages. ADDISON COUNTY — The latest book by Bristol resident and Addison Independent outdoor columnist Matthew Dickerson hit the shelves last week.

Dickerson describes “Downstream: Reflections on Brook Trout, Fly Fishing, and the Waters of Appalachia,” co-authored by David L. O’Hara, as a mosaic combining nature writing, fly-fishing narrative, memoir and philosophical and spiritual inquiry.

ANeSU communities see tax levies increase

ADDISON COUNTY — Most property owners in the five-town area are seeing higher tax bills than last year.

Selectboards in Bristol, Lincoln, Monkton, New Haven and Starksboro set municipal tax rates in the past month or so to pay for town staffing obligations and highway spending.

Town leaders have also received final homestead and non-residential school tax rates from the state, allowing towns to send out 2014-2015 tax bills. Each of the five towns are served by the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union.

Middlebury retirement home changes hands

MIDDLEBURY — Bullrock Corp. has signed an agreement to sell its senior care-related holdings — including the Lodge at Otter Creek retirement community in Middlebury — in what is being called one of the largest private transactions in the state’s history.

Monkton residents lobby for soil testing

MONKTON — Does soil along the VELCO power line route in Monkton contain unsafe levels of a hazardous chemical, and if so, who is responsible for cleaning it up?

Those questions were the subject of a meeting among a dozen Monkton residents and representatives from the departments of Public Service, Health and Environmental Conservation, as well as VELCO on the evening of Aug. 7 at the Monkton Firehouse.

City plan changes to be discussed in Vergennes

VERGENNES — Vergennes residents on Monday, Aug. 25, will have a chance to learn more about and comment on a new municipal plan that city officials are calling an update to the award-winning 2009 Vergennes plan, not a rewrite.

The Vergennes City Council set a public hearing on the updated plan for 6 p.m. that Monday in the Vergennes fire department’s basement meeting room.

Middlebury is expecting 10,000 for 'Ciderbration'

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont Hard Cider doesn’t do anything halfway, as evidenced by last week’s grand unveiling of its new, 100,000-square-foot, $34 million cidery off Exchange Street.

Various state officials and U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., spoke and observed the ribbon cutting for a facility that will churn out thousands of gallons of the company’s popular Woodchuck brand cider.

Waltham tax hike largest in ANwSU

WALTHAM — The Waltham residential property tax rate for the current fiscal year rose by 28.74 cents, or about 16 percent, the largest increase among the five Addison Northwest Supervisory Union towns.

Waltham’s selectboard set its residential and non-residential tax rates last week. Like all Vermont property tax rates, an increase in the statewide school tax rate pushed the town’s rates higher.
