Ripton third-grader to sell pizza to fund D.C. trip

RIPTON — Ripton Elementary School will hold a pizza bake fundraiser on Friday, Feb. 12, for third-grader Addison Dunakin’s upcoming trip to Washington, D.C.

Dunakin, 8, was nominated by her teacher, Susan Ogilvie, and has been selected to attend the National Youth Leadership Forum – Pathways to STEM program this July. Proceeds from the pizza bake will help defray tuition costs for the program.

Middlebury rail bridges likely to rise after all

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury’s effort to maintain the height of its two downtown rail bridges received a setback last week with news that VTrans is unlikely to recommend such a concession because two types of train vehicles can’t squeeze through spans with only 18 feet, 8 inches of clearance.

Ferrisburgh picks sheriff, not city force

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh selectboard has ended two months of debate at board meetings and around town by voting to contract with the Addison County Sheriff’s Department, not the Vergennes Police Department, for part-time law enforcement services in the upcoming fiscal year.

Monkton Central School's Gagner honored for innovative teaching

MONKTON — Kate La Riviere Gagner, a fifth- and sixth-grade teacher at Monkton Central School, has received two honors for her innovative science and design technology teaching practices. Gagner was selected for a Winter 2016 Engineering is Elementary Teacher Scholarship, or EiE, from Boston’s Museum of Science, and as a VITA-Learn IGNITE Educator.

Tiger dancers perform well at home event

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School dance team on Friday earned top-three finishes in both its disciplines in the Tigers’ only home competition of the winter, held in the MUHS gymnasium.

The Tiger team trailed only Mount Mansfield in the six-team Hip Hop competition, while Mount Mansfield also won the five-team Jazz discipline, with Enosburg edging the Tigers for second place.

Three teams competed in Pom, with Richford, Mount Anthony and Springfield running 1-2-3.

In the photo, the mountain lion lies on its side on the shoulder of a Connecticut parkway. Taillights shine in the distance. A Connecticut state trooper snapped the photo after a motorist had struck and killed the animal on a June night in 2011.

Google honors Addison County fifth-grader

VERGENNES — A talented student in Addison County could soon have his art on the Google homepage for hundreds of millions to see.

Google on Friday announced the 53 state and territory winners in its eighth annual Doodle 4 Google competition, a contest open to K-12 students across the United States to redesign the Google logo inspired by the theme “What makes me...me”

Bullets strike Leicester church

LEICESTER — Parishioners arrived at the Church of the Nazarene on Route 7 in Leicester for Sunday morning services on Jan. 24 to find four bullets holes in the church sanctuary.

The bullets appear to have been fired into the church from outside on the south side of the building.

One of the bullets was lying on the floor of the church and has been turned over to Vermont State Police, who have considered a possible link to an incident at Brandon Scrap Metal four days earlier.

Aldermen tax petition filed too late

VERGENNES — Members of the Vergennes City Council meeting, at their Jan. 26 meeting, deemed untimely a petition submitted by former Alderwoman Clara “Ziggy” Comeau and declined to place an article she requested on the Town Meeting Day ballot.

Petitioned articles had a Jan. 14 deadline, earlier than the Jan. 25 deadline for submitting paperwork for those wishing to run for elective office. Comeau presented her petition on Jan. 21, Hawley said, saying she had been confused about the dates.

Ensemble travels back in time

MIDDLEBURY — Heliand Consort presents “Distant Mirrors — Music between the wars, 1918-1939,” a program of music for flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, piano and vocal selections, on Sunday, Feb. 21, at 3 p.m. at Middlebury College’s Mahaney Center for the Arts. A pre-concert talk is at 2:30. The Vermont chamber music ensemble is known for its musically diverse programs that blend classical instrumental music with song.
