Confederate flags prompts local rebuke

EAST MIDDLEBURY — The recent flying of Confederate flags on at least two private properties in Middlebury is being condemned by many area residents still reeling in the aftermath of white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Va., that left one woman dead, numerous people injured, and a nation in need of healing.

Locals noted the Confederate flags flying this past weekend at a Case Street home in the village of East Middlebury and another that was still flying on Wednesday at a School House Hill Road residence east of the airport.

Makeshift gun ranges draw fire; call for safer shooting spaces grows

ADDISON COUNTY — The sound of gunfire way off in the woods is not unfamiliar to folks who enjoy trekking through the forests of Addison County. For Bill Mathis, who lives adjacent to a gravel pit turned shooting range in Goshen, that distant salvo has turned into bullets flying past as he sits on his porch.

“It’s (happened) probably four or five times,” Mathis said. “It is a bit disconcerting to have bullets whiz over your head.”

Vermonters raise their voices against bigotry

MIDDLEBURY — Close to 100 people gathered Monday evening in Middlebury for a rally in solidarity with those opposing white nationalists, in response to the weekend’s tragic events in Charlottesville, Va.

“People needed to share their indignation and dismay,” said Ariane van Driel van Wageningen, one of the organizers of the demonstration and a leader with Middlebury Indivisible.

Civil War Heritage Trail runs through county

MIDDLEBURY — Several Addison County towns have been  included on the new Vermont in the Civil War Heritage Trail. The trail was recently launched by the Milton Historical Society and General Stannard House Committee, as well as fellow sites, partners and stakeholders throughout the state.

State troopers increased local patrols

ADDISON COUNTY — Local drivers may have seen more Vermont State Police troopers on the highways lately.

During the latter half of last week and the first half of this week, state police increased traffic enforcement efforts and traffic safety messaging statewide as part of our response to a tragic week of highway fatalities.

WhistlePig's 'Black Prince Rye' earns best in show

SHOREHAM — Officials at WhistlePig Whiskey have been whistling some happy tunes in recent months.

This spring saw release “FarmStock,” the Shoreham distillery’s first installment of whiskey using rye culled from its 400-acre farm off Quiet Valley Road in Shoreham. The company’s “Black Prince Rye" won “best in show” at the prestigious 2017 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.”

Bluegrass Storm' shakes the vines in New Haven

NEW HAVEN — Bob Degree & the Bluegrass Storm will perform at Lincoln Peak Vineyard on Friday, Aug. 18, 6-8 p.m. These hard-driving bluegrass fiends will be blowing a gale in the vineyard. 

The vineyard opens at 5:30 for picnicking. Food for sale by Antidote of Vergennes, and wine by the glass. Admission is free. Bring lawn chairs or a picnic blanket.

The Wine Down Friday series happens rain or shine — there’s room on the winery porch in the case of rain. No alcohol may be brought onto the grounds; leave your pets at home too.

Bristol Police Log: Two jailed after police find them together

BRISTOL — A Bristol police officer’s observation on Aug. 8 of Patrick Cota, 24, of Bristol and Melissa Sird, 35, of Ferrisburgh together at a Bristol business started a chain of police actions.

Police report that their investigation showed that Cota and Sird were under court-ordered conditions of release that prevented each with having contact with the other. On Aug. 9 an officer found Cota at his West Street home and also searched the home and found Sird there. The officer took them both into custody without incident.
