Editorial: Parents to students — want to make an extra $500,000

In Vermont, it’s well known that our high school graduation rate is one of the highest in the country, while we rank toward the bottom among states in sending graduating seniors to higher education. Roughly 40 percent of high school graduates in Vermont do not go on to post-secondary education.

Part of the reason is money: A college-education is expensive and Vermont ranks among the least generous of states to subsidize those expenses for in-state students.

Two runners and a pitcher earn recognition

VERMONT — The Vermont Sports Media Association chose a 72-year-old marathon specialist, a junior softball pitcher from BFA-Fairfax High School, and a junior track and field athlete from Mount Mansfield Union as its athletes of the month for May.

Elected in statewide balloting of VSMA membership were: Newton Baker of Montpelier as the Open Division Athlete of the Month, Kayla Mathieu of BFA-Fairfax as the High School Female Athlete of the Month, and Alec Eschholz of Mount Mansfield Union as the High School Male Athlete of the Month.

Editorial: State demographics signal 'scary' times for rural areas

Here are two seemingly contradictory numbers that represent the nut of Vermont’s economic challenge: In the past four years, Vermont’s workforce has shrunk by 8,700 workers, while the total employed has gone up slightly from 339,700 in 2014 from 338,400 in 2013.”

Now, wait a minute, you might think. How can the workforce be shrinking by that much and we have more total employment over the past two years? And if total employment is up, and unemployment is statistically at rock bottom (3.3 percent), what’s the big worry?

WINOOSKI — According to Gov. Peter Shumlin, Vermont needs more people like Kyle Munderville, 30 years old and employed by the online retailer MyWebGrocer in Winooski. Munderville graduated from Colgate University in 2011 with degrees in psychology and music and, after working for a short while in New York City, she came to Vermont to pursue a higher quality of life and lower costs.

ADDISON COUNTY — Incumbent State Sens. Claire Ayer, D-Addison, and Christopher Bray, D-New Haven, are unopposed in their re-election bids for the two Senate seats representing Addison County, Huntington and Buel’s Gore.

That news became clear following the June 12 filing deadline for candidates vying for the Vermont Senate and many other offices.
