Opinion: Middlebury selectboard has set an unfortunate tone

Posted on February 26, 2014 |
By Barbara Shapiro

An open letter to the Middlebury Selectboard:

When you treat voters as participants to be consulted rather than obstacles to be managed, you foster a very different process from the one you created for the municipal site proposal. An open discussion that welcomes all views lends itself to respectful exchange of ideas and fruitful collaboration, even when opinions are strong and differ.

Opinion: Voters shouldn't buckle to high-pressure sales pitch

Posted on February 26, 2014 |
By Michael Olinick

We have all recently been hit with an all-out attack by the combined forces of Middlebury College President Ron Liebowitz, Angelo Lynn, and the majority of the town selectboard. They are pressuring voters to support an expensive bond proposal, hatched in secret, that would sell off the prominent site of our municipal facilities, demolish these historic structures, and create two inadequate buildings in bad locations.

Opinion: Proposal earns resounding 'yes'

Posted on February 26, 2014 |
By Paul Ralston

I will vote YES to support the selectboard plan and bond request for a new town hall and gym. My YES vote is my “Thank You” to our elected and appointed officials for their thoughtful and prudent deliberations. My YES vote is my “Thank You” to Middlebury College for another generous offer of financial support to our town. And, my YES vote is my “Thank You” for a plan that will keep our tax burden to a bare minimum.

Editorial: Five reasons to vote yes on town office plan

Posted on February 24, 2014 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

In the past several months, opponents to moving the municipal building and athletic facility in Middlebury to its proposed new sites have zeroed in on a few alleged faults of the plan. In each case, those allegations have been proven wrong.

Here’s a brief rundown of those issues as they apply to Article 6 that Middlebury residents will vote on by Australian ballot on March 4:

Opinion: Town can restore historic vista

Posted on February 24, 2014 |
By Louise Vojtisek

The archival photos that depict the area around Twilight Hall before the construction of the gym and the high school buildings are what reinforced my decision to vote in favor of the selectboard plan. That historical, aesthetically pleasing vista would be possible again, for everyone in town to enjoy.

Editorial: Vote 'Yes' on UD-3 lease of land for town rec building

Posted on February 20, 2014 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Voters of the seven-town UD-3 school district will decide next Tuesday whether it is prudent to lease 2.5 acres of land to the town of Middlebury on which to site the town’s municipal gym. The UD-3 board earlier endorsed the project, which would also include a $400,000 bond vote for a 2,000-square-foot addition onto the building to be used for Middlebury Union High and Middle School sporting events.

Opinion: Resist Middlebury College's sprawl further into town

Posted on February 17, 2014 |
By Diane Mott

Middlebury residents:

Again, Middlebury College tries to creep further into town. Have you any idea how much property they have appropriated? Before even thinking of voting for losing a marvelous classic building and giving up more land, get a list of what Middlebury College owns in town without being taxed.

Trying to squeeze the town property further into a small space behind the library is ridiculous — no parking, period, and the town gets smaller.

Community Forum: On the college's offer to the town

Posted on January 27, 2014 |
By Ron Liebowitz

This week’s writer is Ron Liebowitz, president of Middlebury College.

Last year several members of the Middlebury selectboard approached the college with a straightforward proposal: Would we join forces with the town to help realize its long-held desire to replace the aging municipal building and gymnasium?
