Middlebury technology firm lands $1M award to spur solar

Posted on October 23, 2014 |
By Addison Independent

MIDDLEBURY — A homegrown cloud software company specializing in data analysis has landed a major federal award.

Faraday — which incubated in the former county courthouse building in Middlebury’s court square — on Wednesday received a $1 million U.S. Department of Energy SunShot Initiative award. The funding will help Faraday develop the software service it sells to the solar power industry.

Opinion: Vermont landscape being blanketed by solar projects

Posted on October 23, 2014 |
By Virginia Williams

The Green Mountain Boys of Vermont are back and this 21st-century army of renewable energy soldiers is by all appearances fighting for nothing more than personal gain. With warp-speed competitive zeal this 1 percent band of investors, developers and manufacturers is very busy blanketing the landscape of Vermont with solar fields.

Towns debate role of solar, legislators consider Act 248 reform

Posted on October 16, 2014 |
By Zach Despart

NEW HAVEN — As towns in Addison County field proposals for new solar power arrays, town officials and area legislators say they’d like to see communities have more influence over where projects can be sited, and how large they can be.

Opinion: Solar power projects should also face local review

Posted on October 15, 2014 |
By Paul and Frances Stone

The rapid influx of solar panels in Vermont is causing a blight on the landscape, mainly due to the fact that town planning has no input in the siting process. State law gives the Public Service Board, which has only three members, complete responsibility for determining the location of all energy projects; the board does not have to respect local planning. So the board lets the developer do the siting and apparently doesn’t care enough to think about how these solar panels are changing the character of Vermont.

Opinion: NIMBY-ism a foe of green energy

Posted on October 8, 2014 |
By Eric Hanson

I could not disagree more with some recent letters to the editor regarding solar power development in Vermont. We are so used to living lives with our power being generated at distant power plants that are out of sight and out of mind that we tend to forget that any form of energy production has its adverse impacts.

Opinion: Green energy project impacts should be shared

Posted on October 8, 2014 |
By Peter Rothschild

As yesterday’s article in the Rutland Herald demonstrated, a major issue in achieving Vermont’s goal of producing 90 percent of its energy needs from renewable sources by 2050 is how to balance what has been determined to be the public good with the democratic character of our society.

Do solar arrays qualify for current use tax benefits?

Posted on October 2, 2014 |
By Zach Despart

ADDISON COUNTY — As new solar arrays pop up around Addison County, and a litany of others await Public Service Board approval, some town officials and residents are wondering how much tax revenue these solar projects will generate.

One question many have is whether the land used for solar arrays can be enrolled in “current use,” a designation that decreases the assessment value of farm and forestland, and thus lowers property tax bills.

SunCommon is in preliminary negotiation with a neighbor in East Barnard, and we are unsure whether to remain part of the global warming problem or become part of the solution.

Opinion: Solar companies must take more care in siting panels

Posted on October 1, 2014 |
By Robert Deeble

Following the afterglow of the 300,000-person march for global warming in New York City, I’d like to introduce an alternate dose of reality to the discussion. SunCommon solar company of Waterbury seems to have the Vermont governor and the Public Service Board in their hip pocket.
