Shumlin meets with landowners about Vermont Gas negotiations

Posted on November 20, 2014 |
By Zach Despart

MONTPELIER — A group of landowners along the route of the first phase of the Addison Rutland Natural Gas Project met with Gov. Peter Shumlin last week to discuss concerns they have with how Vermont Gas is negotiating easements for the pipeline.

For the half-hour sitdown at the governor’s office in Montpelier on Nov. 13, Shumlin brought along his chief of staff, Liz Miller, Department of Public Service Commissioner Chris Recchia and Justin Johnson, the deputy secretary for the Agency of Natural Resources.

Opinion: Secret ballots a very bad idea

By Bryan Young

I appreciated the recent opinion letter from my Democratic counterpart, Bob Zeliff, regarding the outcome of the Milne/Shumlin race and the necessity of a legislative vote to determine the next governor.

Eric Davis: Voters sent strong signal to Shumlin

Posted on November 12, 2014 |
By Eric L. Davis

Only 193,000 of Vermont’s 443,000 registered voters cast ballots in last week’s General Election. The turnout of 43.5 percent is a record low in the modern era of Vermont politics. This low turnout reflects strong dissatisfaction with the choice of candidates for governor.

Opinion: Milne is backpedaling on his pre-election pledge

Posted on November 12, 2014 |
By Bob Zeliff

I’ve become disturbed in reading about Scott Milne spending time weighing his options concerning the election results. As recently as two weeks ago he indicated that the election should be determined by the popular vote. Now he is backpedaling that, considering other options. His option of requesting a recount is certainly valid, but expensive, as Lt Gov. Phil Scott pointed out recently.

Vermont voters sent a message to Gov. Peter Shumlin on Tuesday and it was anything but subtle. Voters don’t trust him.

And for good reason.

Opinion: Single-payer no Medicare threat

Posted on November 6, 2014 |
By Ellen Oxfeld

Recent letters and news stories have expressed the fear that a Vermont based single-payer system would be a threat to Medicare. This is simply untrue and here is why. The law that set Vermont on the path to single payer specifies on its very first page that Green Mountain Care will cover all Vermonters “regardless of income, assets, health status, or availability of other health coverage.” Also, federal law does not allow for any state to take away Medicare or change Medicare benefits for seniors.

Editorial: The Independent endorses candidates

Posted on October 30, 2014 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

When voters go to the polls next Tuesday, Nov. 4, the role they should assume is that of the boss making new hires. The voters’ job is to sort through the various applications, review their records and accomplishments, and hire the best candidates for their respective positions. This is not a popularity contest, but rather a nuts-and-bolts analysis of which candidate will best serve in the elected position.

With that in mind, we offer the following endorsements and comments on the upcoming election:

Here are some things to look for as Vermont election results are reported next Tuesday night.

Turnout. Off-year turnout in Vermont typically runs between 55 and 60 percent of the registered voters. This year’s turnout is likely to be between 45 and 50 percent, about 10 percent lower than normal.
