MIDDLEBURY — A group of Middlebury College students met in a sixth floor Bicentennial Hall classroom one recent morning to plan their hunt for bacteria. Their ultimate goal was to reduce or eliminate the potentially dangerous cyanobacteria that has become a growing pollution problem in Lake Champlain and other bodies of water.

But just as important is that they learn processes and habits of mind that will make them good engineers, mathematicians and scientists.

Clippings: County's aging population isn't all bad news

Posted on July 16, 2014 |
By Weyland Joyner

Some state and area officials look at the aging population of Vermont as an obstacle to economic development in Addison County — as the demographic of residents 70 and older is expected to double in the next 20 years, while the 20-49-year-old demographic drops by 11 percent — but in my experience, there is an alternative, more positive story hiding in the data.

Middlebury students tend to the garden

MIDDLEBURY — A lone wooden sign on Route 125 west of Middlebury village marks the Middlebury College Organic Farm, tucked on a slight rise in the gently rolling field beyond Bicentennial Hall.

Even though regular classes are not in session, the farm is active, with summer interns busily cultivating a half-acre of land to produce vegetables and herbs for consumption in the college’s dining halls.

Middlebury summer language schools attracting military linguists

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College’s campus is far from empty every summer after undergraduate students depart. The college’s summer language schools, established nearly a century ago, provide an influx of new faces for six to eight weeks every June.

Language school students are normally prohibited from speaking English at any point during the program, leading to the slogan, “No English Spoken Here.” The annual appearance of foreign-language-speaking students has become a familiar phenomenon to Middlebury residents and business owners.

College students' food nonprofit is taking flight

ADDISON COUNTY — The average price of a well-balanced meal in the United States is around $2.70, according to the hunger relief charity Feeding America. In Vermont, the average is closer to $3.14, and in Addison County, the figure rises again, to $3.66.

A nonprofit organization launched last year by a group of Middlebury College students has found a way to cut prices to around $1.50 by distributing food boxes at locations throughout Addison County.

Bread Loaf offers Shakespeare in the summer

RIPTON — Last Wednesday evening around 30 Bread Loaf School of English graduate students, staff, faculty and children gathered here in a small white building — the “Burgess Meredith Little Theater” behind the Bread Loaf Inn — to audition for the handful of supporting roles in this summer’s production of Shakespeare’s “Troilus and Cressida.” Students and faculty read from Shakespearian monologues, enduring a lengthy audition process that went well into the night, and many community members came simply to watch.

RIPTON — Acclaimed writer and activist Rick Bass sparked a lively discussion about activism, the environment, and the justice system when he gave a lecture titled “The Joy of Being Arrested” at Middlebury College’s Bread Loaf campus this past Thursday morning.

Bass told the story of being arrested when he zip-tied himself to the gates of the White House to protest the Keystone XL pipeline the day after President Obama’s State of the Union address in February 2013.

Gertrude Lathrop at Midd College reunion CMYK.jpg

BRISTOL/MIDDLEBURY — As a student at Middlebury College, Gertrude Lathrop helped pay tuition by working as a waitress and house cleaner.

“Jobs were scarce,” she recalled in a recent interview at her home in Bristol.

The state of the job market should not be surprising, since Lathrop attended the college from 1930 to 1934, the height of the Great Depression.

Greg Dennis: At a college reunion, ghosts of present and past

Posted on June 12, 2014 |
By Greg Dennis

A woman takes her seat for a long train ride in a foreign country. She’s a plant biologist who travels the world to study and document rare plant species. It’s one more trip among many.

For the past two years, since her husband Michael died, she’s been traveling even more. Sometimes staying ahead of the pain, sometimes just learning to live with it. (This is a true story, though the names and some details have been changed to protect the principals’ identities.)
