MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College alumna turned Emmy- and Peabody-award-winning journalist Sarah Kramer returned to her alma mater Oct. 11 to talk about new channels for storytelling, eccentric interview subjects and her job as the multimedia producer for The New York Times.

Her talk, called “Personal Narrative in the Digital Age,” was the first this year in the college’s Meet the Press series. It drew from Kramer’s 15 years as a multimedia journalist.

Vermont poet laureate aims to be accessible

By Tom Slayton

VERMONT POET LAUREATE SYDNEY LEA.jpg

Sydney Lea, Vermont’s current poet laureate, wants to use that honorary position to clear away some of the fog that he believes surrounds poetry these days.

“I would like to de-mystify poetry,” he says. “Poetry is really just another way of looking at the world.”

And so, Lea is focusing his four-year term as poet laureate on appearances around the state where he is sure of finding ordinary Vermonters who might be willing to give poetry another try: community libraries.

By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Burlington Republican Jack McMullen has perhaps best been known in Vermont’s political circles for having been unable to identify the correct number of teats on a cow when put on the spot by his irrepressible U.S. Senate GOP primary opponent Fred Tuttle in 1998.

Fourteen years later, McMullen himself is chuckling about that legendary misstep and is touting his credentials as a candidate for Vermont attorney general, a post he hopes to wrest from longtime Democratic incumbent Bill Sorrell.

By Xian Chiang-Waren

VERMONT — Proposed changes to Vermont’s maple syrup grading system are stirring up controversy in the sugaring community.

The changes, which would implement a new set of international grading standards that are consistent across state and national boundaries, are supported by those who feel it will make Vermont syrup more competitive on a bigger world stage. But others say Vermont’s already got the upper hand, and a change in labeling would not help the Vermont brand.

MIDDLEBURY — Burlington Democrat Doug Hoffer knows that some Vermont politicians have looked at the state auditor’s job as a stepping stone to higher office.

Hoffer, 61, wants voters to know that he would be more than content to serve as auditor for the rest of his professional career.

“It’s the only job I am interested in,” Hoffer said. “I want it to be the last job I ever have.”

We’re not changing the size of our newspaper

Posted on September 21, 2012 |
By Addison Independent

Were you surprised to see the smaller size Addison Independent on newsstands Thursday? We sure were.

Unfortunately the press that normally prints the Addison Independent has been having mechanical problems off and on for the past two weeks. We had the newspaper printed at a different shop this week and, despite our best efforts, it was printed on the wrong size paper — and the normal 21-inch page was shrunk to fit.  Good grief.
