ANwSU school head candidate withdraws

VERGENNES — One of the two finalists for the post of Addison Northwest Supervisory Union superintendent withdrew his candidacy late last week, according to ANwSU officials, leaving ANwSU with just one finalist for the job.

Former South Burlington Assistant Superintendent and Vermont School Board Association Director Winton Goodrich told the ANwSU superintendent search committee that he had one job offer already and was a finalist for another post.

ANwSU picks two superintendent finalists

VERGENNES — Two finalists for the post of Addison Northwest Supervisory Union superintendent will visit the district schools on Feb. 24, meet with the public during that afternoon, and sit with the ANwSU board that evening for final interviews.

They are Orleans Southwest Supervisory Union Superintendent JoAn Canning and former South Burlington Assistant Superintendent and Vermont School Board Association Director Winton Goodrich.

Cost of health care transistion is still unclear

WHITING — With 2017 fast approaching, Addison County residents are pressing lawmakers to estimate the cost of Vermont’s proposed conversion to a single-payer health care system. Act 48, passed by the Legislature in 2011, called for a detailed plan for a single-payer health system by 2017, and a financing scheme was due last year.

Wind ensemble offers free concert at Bixby

VERGENNES — The Windsong Woodwind Quintet will give a free concert at Bixby Memorial Library in Vergennes on Sunday, Feb. 9, at 2 p.m.

Included in the program is “The Mother Goose Suite” by Maurice Ravel and David Maslanka’s “Quintet for Winds No. 2” as well as works by Gabriel, Colomer and Debussy. The performers come from diverse musical backgrounds, drawn together by the shared excitement and joy of live performance. They gather in late fall each year to choose a challenging program and prepare their winter concert series.

City Limits boosts the Commodores

VERGENNES — The Commodore Booster Club saluted local business owner Brett Ward, owner of the City Limits Night Club in Vergennes, on Tuesday night, Jan. 21, at halftime of the Vergennes/Mount Abraham basketball game in Vergennes. The Boosters recognized Ward for his 13 years of support of the Vergennes Union High School Boosters and athletic programs.

In 2013 City Limits contributed $13,000 to the Commodore Booster Club, and since 2001 the business has contributed over $220,000.

City police poised to relocate into new HQ

VERGENNES — Barring any last-minute setbacks, the Vergennes Police Department should be able to start moving into its new $1.75 million North Main Street headquarters by the end of February, City Manager Mel Hawley told Vergennes aldermen at their Tuesday meeting last week.

On Wednesday, Hawley said construction has remained on schedule, and he is at least cautiously optimistic about a completion date during the month’s final week.

Former Vergennes depot picked to host Amtrak station

FERRISBURGH — The Vermont Agency of Transportation has designated the former Vergennes rail station, which now sits at the VTrans commuter lot at the junction of Routes 7 and 22A in Ferrisburgh, as a future stop for Amtrak commuter trains, according to Rep. Diane Lanpher, D-Vergennes.

Lanpher late last week emphasized Amtrak service in northwestern Vermont, long a goal of state transportation officials, remains several years away, but added, “I can’t tell you how thrilled I am” about the possibility.

VUHS peace banners hung at the Statehouse

Five-way race set for three Vergennes City Council seats

VERGENNES — Three Vergennes City Council incumbents and two former aldermen filed petitions by Monday’s deadline, setting up a five-way race for three seats on the council in March.

On the Town Meeting Day ballot, incumbents Ziggy Comeau, Renny Perry and Lynn Donnelly will face challengers Peter Garon and former mayor Michael Daniels.

Comeau, a real estate broker, was first appointed to the board in 2005 and has won re-election ever since.

New grocery store eyed for Vergennes

FERRISBURGH — Denecker Chevrolet co-owner Tom Denecker said last week his pending $350,000 purchase of land owned by Ferrisburgh at the intersection of Routes 7 and 22A is going well, and he also confirmed he has a prospective purchaser or tenant for the 14 North Main St., Vergennes, branch of his existing dealership.

And the Vergennes Development Review Board on Dec. 30 approved an application for a proposed new business in what is now primarily Denecker Chevrolet’s service and parts branch: Neil’s Family Market, a grocery store.
