VERGENNES — It’s not often that high school teachers can take a semester away from teaching to focus exclusively on creating a more progressive learning environment.

But that is just what Vergennes Union High School Spanish teacher Kristine Kirkaldy will do next fall. She recently became the second teacher from VUHS to win a Rowland Fellowship, which each year awards $100,000 to up to 10 Vermont secondary school educators to fund a semester researching and developing a project focused on “enhancing the institution’s culture and climate,” according to the foundation’s Web site.

ANwSU unity vote arrives

By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — Residents of the five Addison Northwest Supervisory Union towns on Tuesday will decide whether their schools should be run by one 12-member board instead of the current five boards.

If the one-board measure fails, the Vergennes Union High School board, the Vergennes Union Elementary School Board, the Addison and Ferrisburgh Central school boards, and the ANwSU board composed of representatives from those four boards will continue business as usual.

Bixby seeking more town funds

Posted on February 18, 2010 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — For the first time since 2002, the trustees of the Bixby Memorial Free Library have decided to raise the Vergennes library’s funding requests from the five communities it serves.

In 2002 the Bixby — at that time funded far less by its service area than other Vermont libraries — asked for and received a significant increase in the towns’ support, to a total of $53,604 a year.

Since then, the Bixby’s board has not sought more even though its operating expenses rose about 3 percent a year, according to treasurer Donna Corcoran.

Vergennes agrees to take over pool, land

Posted on February 11, 2010 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — After almost a year of discussion, on Tuesday the Vergennes city council voted unanimously to accept a total of about 8.6 acres from the Vergennes ID school board, land that consists of two parcels near Vergennes Union Elementary School and is home to the city’s recreation facilities, including its swimming pool.

The transfer will become effective on June 30, when the ID board is set to dissolve per a March 2009 vote by Vergennes residents.

Senior housing project may open in 2011

Posted on February 1, 2010 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — The principal developer of the planned Vergennes senior housing project said last week that he is optimistic that the last pieces of the funding puzzle will fall into place this spring, allowing construction to start this summer and — if all goes well — seniors to move in by the summer of 2011.

Matt Moore, Housing Vermont Inc.’s project developer for the proposed 25-unit, $5.8 million facility off Monkton Road, said two grant requests totaling $1.6 million are still outstanding.

City voters to consider bill-paying grace period

Posted on January 28, 2010 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — Vergennes residents in March will have the chance to vote themselves a 15-day period during which they would be allowed to make late payments on tax and sewer bills without an interest penalty.

A provision for such a grace period is on the Town Meeting Day ballot adopted by Vergennes aldermen at their Tuesday meeting.

Current city laws call for a 1 percent penalty to be applied automatically if quarterly tax or sewer payments are even one day late, but City Hall workers urged aldermen to consider giving residents the power to make the change.

Races are few in Vergennes area

Posted on January 28, 2010 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — Not counting possible write-ins competition or floor votes, Vergennes-area residents may face only two choices between candidates for office on Town Meeting Day.

In Ferrisburgh, incumbent selectman and former town fire chief Bob Jenkins is facing a challenge from Kurt Plank, an organizer of the Friends of Ferrisburgh for Responsible Growth group that, among other things, opposed the Route 7 Champlain Oil Company Inc. proposal for a combined convenience store, fast-food restaurant and gas station.

Firefighters reward service, leadership

web_fire3773.jpg

VERGENNES — Gov. James Douglas set the tone for the evening at last Wednesday night’s Addison County Firefighters Association annual dinner meeting.

He asked the scores of white- and blue-shirted men and women present at the Addison Eagles Club to think for a moment about longtime Vergennes Fire Chief Ralph Jackman, a lifetime member of the ACFA who died Jan. 2 after 62 years of service to his department.

“Ralph’s gone, but we’ll always remember his service to the community,” said Douglas.

VUES board adopts level spending plan

Posted on January 21, 2010 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — Although the face value of the Vergennes Union Elementary School budget will look bigger, residents of Vergennes, Panton on Waltham will be asked on Town Meeting Day this year to approve a little less elementary school spending than in 2009.

That’s because the 2010-2011 VUES budget will include money previously voted on separately in the three union towns’ ID board (essentially elementary school board) budgets.
