Incumbents turn back challenges in Vergennes-area House race

VERGENNES — Incumbents Diane Lanpher, D-Vergennes, and Warren Van Wyck, R-Ferrisburgh, on Tuesday prevailed in a competitive four-way race to win the Addison-3 district’s two seats and will represent Ferrisburgh, Vergennes, Addison, Panton and Waltham in the Vermont House of Representatives for the next two years.

Vergennes students learn about local foods

VERGENNES — With the help and direction of a Farm to School Team and a Farm to School Planning Grant, the entire 8th grade team at Vergennes Union Middle School, Team Phoenix, is engaged in a six-week local foods unit.

Team Phoenix with the help of their teachers and staff members from the Willowell Foundation beginning in early October embarked on an interdisciplinary experience learning about food systems — local and national.

Vergennes police nab pair in heroin sting

VERGENNES — Two Vergennes residents are facing felony heroin possession and sales charges after being snared in a successful sting operation by city police on Oct. 17.

Chelsea A Barrows, 22, and Mark K. Kennedy, 27, pleaded innocent to the charges at their Monday arraignment appearances in Addison Superior Court, criminal division. If convicted, they face penalties of up to five years in jail and/or a fine of up to $100,000 on each charge, according to court records.

City youth club seeks zoning OK for new headquarters

VERGENNES — The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Vergennes is continuing to work toward a potential purchase of a home at 75 Main St. as a new headquarters, in seeking both a city permit and funds for the project.

On Oct. 6, about two dozen people attended a Vergennes Development Review Board hearing on the proposed change of the property from a single-family home to a community center.

Vergennes Police Log: Cite cops cite three in heroin case

VERGENNES — Vergennes police with help from Vermont State Police late last week arrested two people and cited a third in a heroin case.

Following an Oct. 17 search of an apartment at 285 Main St., police on Sunday arrested Chelsea Ann Barrows, 22, of Vergennes and Mark Kevin Kennedy, 27, of Vergennes and Citrus County, Fla., and lodged both at the Chittenden County Correctional Center.

Aldermen mull future of space formerly occupied by police dept.

VERGENNES — The Vergennes city council on Tuesday began considering what to do with the roughly 800 square feet of city hall formerly occupied by the Vergennes Police Department. According to Mayor Bill Benton aldermen hope to have a plan in place by January.

ANwSU picks new business manager

VERGENNES — Addison Northwest Supervisory Union, beset by financial woes since the Vermont Agency of Education earlier this year said it would withhold funds because of “very weak” bookkeeping and many accounting problems, has taken another step toward putting the school district on firm financial ground.

Superintendent JoAn Canning announced on Monday that Windsor Northwest business manager Tonia Mears has accepted the business manager position in the Vergennes-area school district, effective Oct. 28.

County House candidates to debate economy in Vergennes

VERGENNES — An Oct. 15 debate on economic issues has been scheduled for the 14 candidates in contested Addison County elections for the Vermont House of Representatives.

The public is invited to the Vergennes Opera House at 7 p.m. this coming Wednesday for an event scheduled to last 90 minutes.

The co-sponsors of the event, the Addison County Economic Development Corp. (ACEDC) and Vision to Action Vermont (V2AVT.org), are referring to it as a forum.

Teacher 2nd in New England voting; VUHS awarded $10,000

VERGENNES — Vergennes Union High School teacher Kristine Kirkaldy did not win a September online vote that would have netted her a New England education leadership award and her school $100,000, but the award sponsor announced on Sept. 30 that Kirkaldy and four other nominees would receive $10,000 to advance their work.

Kirkaldy finished second in voting for the Nellie Mae Education Foundation’s third annual Lawrence O’Toole Award, which is named after the 16-year-old Quincy, Mass., foundation’s founder and first CEO.
