BRISTOL — Of the people who begin hiking the Appalachian Trail with the intention of covering the entire thing, only one in four complete it. Most are young, recent college graduates, students taking a gap year, all with young joints and plenty of energy.

Not many 56-year-old women attempt the nearly 2,200-mile, 14-state trek, let alone complete it.

STARKSBORO — In 1965, Lyndon Johnson was president, Apollo 11 had yet to land on the moon, a first-class stamp cost a nickel and a gallon of gas 31 cents.

It was also the year Joyce Shepard started working as a cook at Starksboro’s Robinson Elementary School. She retired in this past summer, after 48 years.

“I just liked working with the kids,” Shepard said. “It kept me young.”

Principal Patrick Hartnett likened Shepard’s tenure to that of a baseball Hall of Famer.

STARKSBORO — Before this year, Eric Rozendaal had never been to Brooklyn, N.Y. Now, he’s visited a dozen times — not as a tourist, but as a vendor of authentic Vermont food at an increasingly popular New York City market.

Rozendaal and his wife, Keenann, own Rockville Market Farm in Starksboro. Every weekend, he travels to “Smorgasburg,” a weekly outdoor food market held in Brooklyn. Smorgasburg hosts 75 to 100 food vendors every week at two locations in the city’s second-most populous borough.

STARKSBORO — Twelve years ago the property on Robert Young Road purchased by Price and Marijke Niles for their retirement was full of grass, brambles and brush.

“It was so bad, the real estate agent told us not to buy it,” Marijke Niles, 67, recalled. “But we fell in love with the big rock, the view and the pond, and I wanted a big open space where I could garden.”

STARKSBORO — Those who have unhappily watched the trends of young people leaving the state and farms closing up shop have reason to celebrate the launch of Footprint Farm in Starksboro this year.

Three young farmers — St. George native Jake Mendell, 25, and California natives Taylor Hutchison, 25, and Nathan Hammer, 32 — started work in April on their diversified, 9-acre farm at Starksboro’s Common Ground Center.

And already the trio says they have found a warm welcome for their mix of vegetables, flowers and animals.

STARKSBORO — An unusual nature-and-arts-based preschool program is wrapping up a successful pilot year.

The Wren’s Nest Preschool is a project of the Willowell Foundation and run by a mother-daughter team of educators. Katie and Karen McEachen of Bristol co-teach the weekly sessions, which are currently run out of Camp Common Ground in Starksboro.

“Willowell has been doing nature education for high schoolers for a decade, and they thought that a preschool would be a really nice sister program,” Katie McEachen said in a recent interview.
