Expanded Starksboro selectboard tackles to-do list

STARKSBORO — At its April retreat, the newly expanded five-person Starksboro selectboard set itself a number of priorities for the work ahead. These include:

•  Evaluating the town’s financial reporting software.

•  Improving methods of communication with community members, including the town website.

•  Continuing maintenance on town buildings and properties.

•  Requiring liability insurance for all town contractors.

•  Reclassification of certain Class Four roads.

Mount Abe School board needs Starksboro, New Haven, Bristol members

BRISTOL — Addison Northeast Supervisory Union officials are alerting residents of Bristol, New Haven and Starksboro that there are openings on the Mount Abraham Union High School Board for members from each of those three towns.

Current school members of the local school boards in each own would like candidates interested in filling these spots to step forward by end of day Monday, April 17, so they could fill those openings on Tuesday.

Jim Geier rocks his chairs into perfection

STARKSBORO — Back in 1975, Jim Geier made his first Vermont Folk Rocker. The ‘65 Saint Mike’s College grad was renovating houses in the Burlington area at the time and had some two-by-fours, plywood and clothes line laying around. So, naturally, he made a hammock.

Tour du Mont Blanc slideshow to take place at Starksboro library March 29

STARKSBORO — The public is invited to join Deb Van Schaack Wednesday, March 29, 7-9 p.m. at the Starksboro Public Library for a slideshow about the Tour du Mont Blanc, a hiking trail that she hiked with her daughter Hannah in the summer of 2014.

STARKSBORO — Starksboro voted in December to increase its selectboard from three to five persons. So on Town Meeting Day, residents, voting by Australian ballot, elected two new selectboard members and also returned an incumbent to the selectboard. Koran Cousino, Keegan Tierney and returning selectman Peter Marsh will join incumbents Susan Jefferies and Tony Porter on Starksboro’s newly expanded selectboard.

STARKSBORO — Starksboro residents will assemble at Robinson Elementary School on Saturday, March 4, at 9 a.m. for their annual town meeting.

Articles to be voted on the floor include a $1,360,885 general fund budget and $2,721,254 in spending for Robinson Elementary School.

With voters in the five towns approving district unification in last November’s election, this is the last year that Starksboro residents will vote the Robinson budget from the floor of town meeting.

Expanded selectboard draws new candidates in Starksboro

STARKSBORO — Residents of Starksboro voted last December to expand the town’s three-person selectboard to a five-person board.

With one existing selectboard seat coming up for re-election, the expansion means there will be three selectboard seats on the Town Meeting Day ballot. As March 7 nears, voters face choices in two of those three positions.

ANESU to hold developmental screenings on March 15

BRISTOL — The Early Education Program of the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union (ANESU) will hold its developmental screenings on Wednesday, March 15, 1-4:30 p.m.

Children will have the opportunity to play in an early childhood classroom using art materials, blocks, puzzles and imaginative play materials.  Parents can share information about their child and learn more about their child’s communication, social, play and motor skills.

The screening is free and will take about one hour.

American odyssey: Starksboro couple driving to Brazil, raising money for Open Door Clinic

STARKSBORO — Christiane Kokubo has seen many Hispanic people, most of them migrant workers, visit the Open Door Clinic (ODC) in Middlebury to receive free health care services. Kokubo, a communications specialist with ODC, never ceases to be touched by the stories of perseverance and isolation that these migrant workers convey to her while receiving vital medical attention.

Kokubo is currently viewing the migrant workers’ story from a decidedly different angle.

Five-town school spending proposals could raise taxes

BRISTOL — School boards around the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union are ready to warn spending plans for the district’s five elementary schools.

When five-town voters cast ballots on Town Meeting Day they will be considering budgets that lower proposed spending at each of the schools but see small increases in the amount to be raised by taxes.
