Painting instructor learned by teaching: Joe Bolger paintings on exhibit at the Edgewater Gallery

Posted on May 25, 2017 |

JBOLG Through the Trees OL $2300 CMYK.jpg

A casual afternoon conversation about painting with artist Joe Bolger can leave you with the knowledge most cannot gain in a semester enrolled in a traditional painting course. His constant desire to learn from inspiring artists drove him to read, reread, dog-ear, and underline all of their writings. He immersed himself in these books until the concepts were part of his own process and understanding. His passion for creating these visions from figures and portraits, to landscapes is the true force behind his genius.

SHOREHAM — Andrew and Elizabeth Done have called many places home during the past 25 years: Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, Louisiana.

Now, they believe they have found a more permanent destination — as the new owners of the historic Shoreham Inn, where they plan to continue a long tradition of hospitality.

“This was a great opportunity to do something we have always wanted to do,” Andrew said on Monday while Elizabeth was making pies — one of her specialties — in the kitchen.

“This really made sense.”

SHOREHAM — Abby Goodrich and Joe Murphy grew up one town away from each other. She in Shoreham, he in Orwell. Abby’s mother, Leslie Goodrich, was Joe’s teacher in elementary school.

But despite their proximity, Abby and Joe never knew each other growing up. Kids from Shoreham travel to Middlebury for middle school and high school, those from Orwell go to Fair Haven.

Instead, the two met years later at a wedding.

Abby had been hired as a wedding photographer for the event. Joe was the best man.

SHOREHAM — Raj Bhakta is surrounded by whiskey, so it’s no stretch for him to make a toast.

And the ubiquitous founder of Shoreham-based WhistlePig Rye Whiskey believes he has much to celebrate right now, with the release last week of the company’s first installment of whiskey using natural resources culled from the 400-acre farm off Quiet Valley Road.

Bhakta also announced the litigation that once threatened his position within the company he founded almost a decade ago has come to an end.

By SETH J. LAPIDOW

n HEAT squad.jpg

SHOREHAM — In 2015 I decided that the time had come to return to my native state and buy a house in Vermont after 30 years away.

We found the ideal place on Smith Street in Shoreham in a big, old farmhouse built by one of Ethan Allen’s boys in 1791 and expanded over the years into a sprawling monster. The heating bills were crazy. But I heard about the Heat Squad and NeighborWorks of Western Vermont from the friendly folks at Green Mountain Power and invited them in.

SHOREHAM — Concern over continued federal funding for the state’s education, health care and Lake Champlain cleanup programs dominated discussion at Monday’s legislative breakfast in Shoreham.

Rep. Dave Sharpe, D-Bristol, called these the “three serious areas of concern” for the 2017 legislative session. All three programs, according to Sharpe, are largely dependent on federal support — which is in flux under the presidency of Donald Trump.
