Dairy industry continues to take hits; worldwide milk glut keeps prices low

SALISBURY — The Bridport Grange and Addison County Farm Bureau will host a legislative luncheon on April 9 that will focus on the mounting financial challenges for farmers in the Green Mountain State.

But local farmers and lawmakers this past Monday had no interest in waiting a week to vent their frustrations, as they spent the vast majority of the latest legislative breakfast describing the fragile state of a dairy industry beset with surplus product that has reduced milk prices and left more farms on the brink of closing.

Salisbury news for April 5

SALISBURY — Salisbury has a new Animal Control Officer, Amanda Landon. She can reached at 802-370-0955.

Property taxes are due Thursday, April 5. Dog licenses are past due. There will be a $4 fee added to the regular cost of $13 for intact animals and $9 for neutered animals.

Town Clerk Sue Scott is looking for an assistant; if interested, contact her during regular office hours: Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Video: Why did the salamander cross the road?

SALISBURY — On early-spring evenings, with the first relatively warm rains, salamanders and frogs move from upland wooded areas to breeding pools to mate and lay eggs. Often these migrations take the amphibians across roads. At a site in Salisbury, Otter Creek Audubon and the Salisbury Conservation Commission help these amphibians safely reach their destination, collect data on
numbers and species, and raise public awareness of these migrations.

SALISBURY — At the recent town meeting various local businesses donated items for the raffle. Attendees could purchase raffle tickets for the items they wanted and names were drawn for each item. Prizes and winners were:

Peggy Cox and Davis Brakeley, $25 worth of Nop Farm beef; $50 treatment at Parlour Salon, David Moats; 10 State Park passes, Beth Morrissey; Landfill passes, Michael Montague, Janet Mosurick and Jody Brakeley; $10 gift certificate at Middlebury Sweets, Jen Nuceder.

Help move amphibians to safety

ADDISON COUNTY — In early spring amphibians abandon the protection of their upland wintering sites to move to lower, wetter sites where they gather and lay eggs. Some amphibians put themselves in jeopardy by crossing roads to get to their reproductive sites. Depending on local vehicle traffic, entire amphibian populations can be wiped out in the process.

SALISBURY — The Salisbury Conservation Commission will have a presentation and field trip about vernal pools this spring, Jim Andrews, well-known local herpetologist, will present “Vernal Pools and the critters that use them” on Thursday, March 22, at the Salisbury Community school from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The field trip will be held on Saturday, April 21 from 9 a.m. to noon. Participants will meet at the parking lot next to Camp Keewaydin’s walk over bridge on Route 53. Both events are free and open to the public.

Salisbury town meeting wrap-up 2018

SALISBURY — Following a county-wide pattern, Salisbury residents approved all the financial requests on their ballot on Town Meeting Day.

There were no contested elections.

Most of the town’s business was completed through Australian ballot voting on Tuesday. On that day, residents endorsed:

•  A general fund spending plan of $204,440, by a 122-16 tally.

•  A highway spending budget of $490,134, by a 115-23 margin.

Salisbury town news for March 1

SALISBURY — Salisbury’s town meeting will be held on Saturday, March 3, at the community school beginning at 3 p.m. Folks should come at 2:30 to get checked in before the start of the meeting. If you are not certain that you are a registered voter check the list posted on the Salisbury Post Office’s bulletin board or contact the town office. Early or absentee voting ends on Thursday, March 1, at 6 p.m. Election Day is Tuesday, March 6, and the polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Vermont Sun series adds new event

SALISBURY/LEICESTER — This summer, a new paddle, bike, run event has been added to The Vermont Sun Triathlon Series that is held in and around Lake Dunmore.

The Branbury Classic Triathlon will be held Sunday, July 15, at Branbury State Park on Lake Dunmore in Salisbury. Vermont Sun Fitness Centers will donate 25 percent of entry fees to the Lake Dunmore Fern Lake Association’s Lakes Alive Now And Forever Capital Campaign. The 1.5-mile paddle (kayak, canoe or paddle board), 14-mile bike, 3.1-mile run event is open to teams and Individuals.

2018 Salisbury town meeting preview

SALISBURY — Salisbury voters at their town meeting will field a proposed highway budget of $490,143 and a suggested general fund spending plan of $204,440.

The informational portion of Salisbury town meeting will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 3, at the Salisbury Community School; a community pot luck will follow. Australian ballot voting on budgets and town officials will take place on Tuesday, March 6, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., at the town office.
