Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference Public Events Schedule

Free theater offered at Bread Loaf campus this week

The Bread Loaf School of English presents Shakespeare’s Othello, directed by Brian McEleney. Performances will run nightly on the Bread Loaf Campus in Ripton at 8 p.m. from Wednesday, Aug. 2, through Sunday, Aug. 6.

There will also be two showings of a staged reading of Lolita Chakrabarti’s play, “Red Velvet,” on Friday, Aug. 4, and Saturday, Aug. 5, at 2 p.m. Call (802) 443-2771 to reserve your free tickets.

Noted wildlife biologist to give black bear talk in Ripton

RIPTON — Ben Kilham, a wildlife biologist based in Lyme N.H., will be giving a slide presentation on black bears  Sunday, July 30, at 7 p.m. at the Ripton United Methodist Church. The presentation will be followed by a questions and answer period.

Kiham’s love of and devotion to black bears has enabled him to study their habits and interact with them for more than two decades. He, his wife Debra and sister Phoebe have accepted orphaned bear cubs into their home and enabled them to successfully return to the wild.

Wooden sculptures going on display in Ripton

RIPTON — Artwork by Goshen’s Brenda Hall, a wood artist and master finisher, will be on display at Ripton Community Church for most of this month.

Friends of the Ripton Community Church will host a reception for the show of wood sculpture pieces this Saturday, July 8, from 4-6 p.m. at the church on Route 125 in Ripton village. Refreshments will be offered.

Poets wanted! Bread Loaf invites local writers to share what matters to them

RIPTON — The Bread Loaf School of English and friends are inviting local people to be a part of group reading that looks to define and build community.

Anyone who writes is invited to submit a poem that they could be selected to read, alongside professional poets, at the inaugural Poetry Free for All event later this month.

Decision is near on moving 6th grade to MUMS: Superintendent says no; panel says yes

MIDDLEBURY — Will the seven towns in the Addison Central School District send their sixth-graders to the Middlebury Union Middle School, expanding MUMS from only grades 7 and 8 to a grade 6-8 school?

The ACSD Board is scheduled to decide the question at its meeting next Monday, June 19.

For a Ripton family, life changed in an instant

MIDDLEBURY — Christina Walker’s daily routine began as usual on Thursday, April 20. She took the wheel of the family car to drive her fiancé, Brian Kerr, from their Ripton home to meet his work colleague in Salisbury. From there, the two men would travel to their latest job site.

It only took a split second for the couple’s lives — and those of their three children — to take a dramatic and tragic turn on that fateful day.

Both conferences are modeled on the Middlebury Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, the oldest writers’ conference in the country.
