RIPTON — More than two dozen former North Branch School students gathered on a cold night at the North Branch School in Ripton on Dec. 28 to reunite, share stories and play Ultimate Jeopardy in the Big Room.

The alums came from all corners of the country and spanned 15 years of graduating classes. “Our alums love to come back to the school,” says Tal Birdsey, co-founder and head teacher at the school. “They loved the school when they were students here, and it’s an important place for them still.”

When you think of a nordic ski club, you might think of spandex suits, streamline sunglasses and hundreds of lean athletes racing around a course pushing off of their skinny skis and tall poles. Next you might think brrrr… and skip the nordic racing scene for warmer clothes and a more tranquil touring experience.

Top 10, No. 10: Gun regulations draw fire

Posted on January 4, 2018 |
By Addison Independent

Two county communities hosted at times heated debates this year about where lines should be drawn between the right to shoot firearms and the right to neighborhood peace and safety.

The situations and the results varied.

In Whiting neighbors of a gun range that town officials said was illegal complained about noise and safety. About two dozen showed up at a zoning board hearing in July to oppose ongoing shooting at a Stickney Road range. The owner, Nicolas Iocco, said he no longer runs the range as a business, although he would accept donations.

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Central School District (ACSD) board on Monday agreed to pursue a level-funded budget for member-schools for the upcoming 2018-2019 academic year, a move that would require more than $1.9 million in cuts and a potential reduction of 14 teaching positions, 18 paraprofessionals, a principal’s post and a central office worker.

n McKibben, Bill by Nancie Battaglia-HighRes SAVE TO ONLINE MORGUE.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — Using humor and wit in his debut novel, “Radio Free Vermont,” environmentalist and Ripton resident Bill McKibben pens a rollicking tale of resistance and political activism through the antics of a handful of Vermont characters whose capers start small then snowball into a full-blown movement to secede from the union — not focused on clever hijinks, but based on “facts, data, ideas.”

Billings storm note of appreciation_1436.jpg

Our state certainly could be thankful for 64 degrees with our power off, which it was for six days or more after the recent wind storm. Some different storm; we could remember the hurricane in 1950.

n America welcomes LEAD Ripton1519.jpg

RIPTON — Mary Magot began a journey 16 years ago. It started in the African nation of Sudan, led her through a civil war, a temporarily fractured household and immense hardship.

Her journey — and those of 14 other people from all corners of the globe — ended on Thursday with a meandering car ride up a serpentine Route 125, near the Robert Frost Trail, to the Ripton Elementary School, where they became citizens of the United States in a ceremony presided over by a federal judge.

n Chorney Michael Chorney.jpg

They play a new kind of “Americana” — one as broad and wide as the name suggests. Folk, blues, rag, jazz and chamber music; the group’s blend is as authentic as the source. Comprised of some of the finest players from Vermont’s small but vital music community, Michael Chorney and Hollar General feature the sounds of acoustic guitar, acoustic bass, steel guitars and drums. The band lifts and carries Chorney’s voice and infuses the songs with the subtlety and spontaneous interaction of a jazz quartet.
