Fun-filled food talk scheduled

NEW HAVEN — What did carrots have to do with the Trojan War? How did it happen that George Washington was nearly poisoned by peas? What is the beef against beets? How did a 17th century pirate come to name the bell pepper?

Common garden vegetables have long and often quirky histories. Science and history writer Rebecca Rupp will tell the stories behind the much-maligned tomato and potato, the pumpkin and “Vermont’s dynamic duo of kale and Gilfeather turnip” in a talk in New Haven next week.

Learn about shelter belt plantings in New Haven

New Haven residents want say on energy project

NEW HAVEN — At last week’s town meeting, New Haven residents made it very clear to their elected officials that they want a say in whether a high-voltage power line and converter station is built in town.

On the floor of the Feb. 29 meeting, New Haven residents passed two straw polls asking the town to gather more information about Anbaric Transmission’s Vermont Green Line proposal and then to hold a town-wide Australian ballot vote on whether to accept Anbaric’s offer.

2016 New Haven Town Meeting Wrap Up

NEW HAVEN — In two competitive races on Town Meeting Day, New Haven returned one incumbent selectboard member to her seat and in a separate race picked a challenger over an incumbent for a second selectboard seat.

Selectboard Chair Kathleen Barrett defeated challenger Dan Monger, 425 to 220, to retain her three-year spot. Selectboard newcomer John Roleau (a long-time New Haven resident and owner of Packard of Vermont) ousted incumbent Carole Hall and also beat challenger Bridget Kipp for the two-year seat. Roleau won with 303 votes, Hall garnered 205 and Kipp 141.

Allegations fly in New Haven selectboard race

NEW HAVEN — The New Haven election race heated up over the weekend with an online exchange centered around selectboard Chair Kathy Barrett, who is running for re-election. At the center of the flare-up is perhaps the largest issue looming before New Haven: Whether the town should say yea or nay to the proposed electric converter station that would be built in town as part of the Vermont Green Line.

2016 New Haven Town Meeting Preview

NEW HAVEN — New Haven’s 254th annual town meeting will be held on Monday, Feb. 29, at the New Haven Town Hall starting at 6:30 p.m. Voting by Australian ballot will take place Tuesday, March 1, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., also at the town hall.

Residents of New Haven will consider 27 articles for the town and seven for Beeman Elementary School, plus vote on the Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center and Mount Abraham Union Middle/High School budgets. Most of New Haven’s articles will be up for discussion Monday night and voted on by Australian ballot on Tuesday.

New' Beeman school building celebrates diamond anniverary

NEW HAVEN — This year marks the 75th anniversary of the “new” Beeman school building, which is located on North Street in New Haven village.

Beeman Academy opened in the fall of 1870. It was incorporated into the town school system in 1894, and finally leased to the New Haven school district in 1912. That same year, it was extensively renovated and expanded.

Sadly, on Oct. 28, 1940, the venerable Beeman Academy burned to the ground.

Five candidates vie for two spots on New Haven selectboard

NEW HAVEN — Both of the New Haven selectboard incumbents who are running for re-election will face challengers on Town Meeting Day.

Kathleen Barrett, currently chair of the selectboard, will stand for a three-year seat against New Haven Planning Commission member Dan Monger. Selectboard member Carole Hall is running against Bridget Kipp and John Roleau for a two-year seat.

Meanwhile, Ed McGuire is running unopposed for re-election to his three-year seat as a Beeman school director.

Controversy over dams in the spotlight

NEW HAVEN — Dams — both in Vermont and around the country — are a controversial environmental issue, with some people arguing that waterways would be better served if dams that have outlived their usefulness were torn down. Staff members of The Nature Conservancy will address the topic in a presentation titled “The Dam Controversy” on Thursday, Feb. 18, at 7 p.m. at the New Haven Town Hall.

New Haven town leaders struggle with powerline

NEW HAVEN — A recent vote on the proposal to build a large converter station to accommodate a 400-megawatt power line that would bring renewable energy through New Haven revealed a selectboard divided in its assessments of the project’s pros and cons.

The Vermont Green Line project would bring New Haven roughly $1 million annually and a number of other enticements, according to developers’ pitch to the town last December.
