Budget for Bristol-area schools reflects 1% spending hike, 16 fewer employees

BRISTOL — Five-town voters on March 6 will cast ballots on a 2018-2019 public school spending plan for Addison Northeast that would result in a 1 percent increase in equalized per-pupil spending and spur some significant staffing changes within the newly created Mount Abraham Unified School District (MAUSD).

The proposed MAUSD budget reflects $24,746,279 in education spending to operate Mount Abraham Union middle and high schools; the elementary schools in Bristol, Lincoln, Monkton, New Haven and Starksboro; and the Addison Northeast central office.

Up to 20 teachers and aides could be cut in Bristol-area schools

BRISTOL — Bristol-area voters on March 6 will field their first-ever unified budget covering all Addison Northeast schools.

The proposed 2018-2019 spending plan now under consideration calls for elimination of 20 full-time-equivalent staff positions — including six full-time teachers — in order to achieve the $1,177,814 in reductions needed to meet the Mount Abraham Unified School District (MAUSD) board’s austerity guidelines.

Top 10, No. 3: Voters reject Mt. Abe bond – again

Will the third time be the charm?

That’s what proponents of a new bond vote to renovate the Mount Abe Union High School facility are hoping. A third vote among Addison Northeast Supervisory Union district voters is likely to be scheduled for this coming Town Meeting Day in March. That proposal will follow two prior defeats and a year of planning, haggling and anguish over what to do with the nearly 50-year-old building.

Bristol churches to join in live nativity to help food shelf this Sunday

BRISTOL — Six local churches will participate in a live outdoor nativity on Sunday, Dec. 17, from 4-5 p.m. on the Bristol town green. The public are invited to take a “Journey to Bethlehem,” beginning at the War Veterans Memorial. Scenes depicting the Christmas story will be portrayed by members of six community churches: New Haven Congregational Church, First Baptist Church of Bristol, St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Federated Church of Bristol, Lincoln United Church and Bristol Christian Fellowship.

New Haven to host holiday party on Dec. 16

NEW HAVEN — The Town of New Haven and the New Haven Congregational Church are throwing a holiday party. Their Winterfest celebration will be held Saturday, Dec. 16, on the town green.

Festivities begin at 4:30 p.m. with tasty treats and hot refreshments at the Congregational Church located on Town Hill Road across from the Town Green. Bundle up, get a cup of hot cocoa, tea, coffee, eggnog or cider, and come across the street to the town green.

Vermont Green Line short-circuits

BRISTOL — Close to 60 five-town residents gathered at Monday night’s meeting of the reinstated Mount Abraham Renovation Committee. It was overwhelmingly the largest draw of residents on the subject of what to do with the 49-year-old facility that houses Mount Abraham Union Middle/High School.

NEW HAVEN — Coca Cola is about as American as apple pie. The original glass Coke bottle was an icon on its own until it was replaced in the U.S. in 1960 by the can. The Coca Cola logo has long been recognized by 94 percent of the global population, making it the world’s most identifiable trademark. Both the logo and the product are so thoroughly identified with the United States that for many people Coke is a symbol of America.

New Haven resident receives national FFA recognition

INDIANAPOLIS — Alan Curler of New Haven was recently selected to receive the Honorary American FFA Degree.

This award is given to those who advance agricultural education and FFA through outstanding personal commitment. The National FFA Organization works to enhance the lives of youth through agricultural education. Without the efforts of highly dedicated individuals, thousands of young people would not be able to achieve success that, in turn, contributes directly to the overall well-being of our society.
