College gets high rank from NCSA

MIDDLEBURY — Just like any compliment, some college rankings need to be taken with a grain of salt.

That is the attitude of Middlebury College Director of Athletics Erin Quinn, anyway, in deference to the National Collegiate Scouting Association’s (NCSA) recent ranking of Middlebury as third overall in their “comprehensive study of both academics and athletics.”

Food shelves see record demand

Posted on September 23, 2010 |
By John Flowers

ADDISON COUNTY — Addison County human services providers are using superlatives these days in describing the state of food and fuel assistance resources available for needy families.

Only in this case, the superlatives are being used in a negative sense.

“I have been here 10 years, and it has never been nearly this bad,” Helping Overcome Poverty’s Effects (HOPE) Executive Director Jeanne Montross said on Monday in describing the emptiness of her agency’s emergency food shelf.

MIDDLEBURY — It was 38 years ago that contractor Dutton Smith Sr., unable to secure a permit from the town of Middlebury for a development proposal, wrote a farcical play summing up his frustrations.

He aptly titled it “The Permit,” and it played to 21 enthusiastic crowds before the script was shelved.

UD-3 board revises cutting strategy for 2011-12 budget

Posted on September 23, 2010 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — UD-3 school officials will explore the consequences of building a 2011-2012 spending plan that is 2 percent less than the current year’s budget.

It’s a sobering assignment, but somewhat less formidable than the task that had been mapped out for the UD-3 budget committee last spring. The panel and UD-3 administrators had been directed to develop a 2011-2012 budget reflecting a 3.5-percent decrease compared to current spending for Middlebury Union Middle School and High School. That would’ve translated into a $558,852 cut.

MIDDLEBURY — When the five local girls who attended the Keewaydin Temagami summer camp in Canada last summer get together, they can trade stories for hours — their favorite boats (which they know by number), their best wildlife sightings, and the close calls they had in turbulent northern waters.

United Way kicks off 2010 fund drive

Posted on September 20, 2010 |
By John Flowers

web_quinns7302.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — The United Way of Addison County (UWAC) officially launched its 2010 fund drive on Thursday by sending around 600 community volunteers to toil at many of the local nonprofits that will share in what officials hope will be a bounty of financial donations.

United Way officials this year have set a campaign goal of $775,000 — the same financial goal that was set last year. An ongoing sluggish economy conspired to leave UWAC $40,000 short of that fund-raising finish line, but campaign organizers — led by co-chairs Pam and Erin Quinn — are optimistic for a better result for 2010.

Cidermaker rides wave of growth

MIDDLEBURY — Green Mountain Beverage’s (GMB) dramatic expansion plans started coming to fruition last week with the delivery of three enormous apple juice holding tanks, the first phase of a major growth blueprint for the nation’s largest hard cider producer that is to include a 7,400-square-foot addition at its Pond Lane plant next year.

The growth spurt comes in wake of the Middlebury selectboard’s decision this past winter to waive sewer and water tap-on fees for GMB’s planned building addition, which will primarily feature new offices, a conference room and visitors’ center.

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Police Chief Tom Hanley last week received a significant bump in rank, one that will extend his law enforcement influence far beyond Addison County’s shire town.

Hanley on Sept. 14 was elected president of the New England Association of Chiefs of Police (NEACP), an organization through which law enforcement agencies from throughout the Northeast collaborate on training, management and crime-solving techniques.
