Lothrop-Neshobe merger panned: OVUSD explores options to address $1.6 million shortfall

BRANDON — If a vote on whether to merge Lothrop and Neshobe elementary schools were conducted at the gym where a recent public forum was held, the result would likely be a resounding “No.”

The idea, which would send kindergarten through third-grade students to one school and fourth- through sixth-graders to the other, is one of two “Big Ideas” that were discussed at two public meetings in the Otter Valley Unified School District in the last week.

Leicester Historical Society sponsors annual Memory Tree

LEICESTER — The Leicester Historical Society is again sponsoring the annual Memory Tree at Leicester Four Corners. Names for the Memory Tree, clearly written, can be sent to Diane Benware at 1594 Old Jerusalem Road, Salisbury VT 05769 by Dec. 20, or payment and names can be dropped off at the Leicester Town Office.

The tree will be lit on Saturday, Dec. 23, at 4 p.m. The cost is $5 for six names.

The Leicester Historical Society is sponsoring Prize Bingo on Saturday, Dec. 9, at 1 p.m. at the Senior Center. Refreshments served, all are welcome.

Rabies confirmed in skunk in Leicester; residents suspect second case

LEICESTER — The only reported case of rabies in Leicester this year was on Ferson Road, but one resident said she dealt with two rabid skunks there this summer.

Linda Moore said Monday that one of her sons, Brian Moore, shot and killed a skunk that was chasing his dog at his neighboring Ferson Road home on Aug. 28. She said the skunk was tested by the Vermont Department of Health and confirmed rabid.

But two days before that incident, she said she’s sure she had a rabid skunk on her own property nearby as well.

Leicester woman killed in one-car crash in Salisbury

SALISBURY — A Leicester woman who was the mother of two was killed in a one-car crash just after midnight this past Wednesday.

Vermont State Police reported that Danielle Austin, 39, was driving a 2013 Chevy EQX westbound on Creek Road in Salisbury around midnight on Sept. 13 when she lost control of the vehicle and it crashed into a utility pole near the intersection with Dewey Road. Police said she was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Learn about 19th century Dunmore sawmill at Salisbury history talk

SALISBURY — From 1864 to the 1930s the Newton and Thompson sawmill at Sucker Brook on the east side of Lake Dunmore was a microcosm of rural community life and activity. On Aug. 16, at 7 p.m. in the Salisbury Congregational Church, Bill Powers will bring to life some of the activities and memories of the forgotten mill.

Included are over 70 photographs along with historical documentation.

Brandon-area insect control district completes largest spraying in 10 years

The Brandon-Leicester-Salisbury-Goshen-Pittsford Insect Control District, known as BLSG, has just completed the largest aerial treatment in 10-plus years equaling 5,496 acres, according to BLSG Coordinator Will Mathis. This is in addition to the 2,408 acres aerial treated this past May 12. 

The latest insect treatment was conducted July 8 by a North Fork Helicopter out of Long Island, N.Y.

Benware is busy in Leicester and Salisbury

LEICESTER — On the land that now houses the Blue Ledge Farm, near Leicester’s border with Salisbury, used to sit the first schoolhouse in Addison County. To those who live there, the remnants of that schoolhouse serve as a symbol of the town’s longstanding commitment to education.

One Leicester resident who embodies that commitment is selectboard Chair Diane Benware, who has also been a teacher in Leicester and the surrounding community for more than 40 years.

LEICESTER — After 15 years of making cheese, you might think that Hannah Sessions and Greg Bernhardt are sick of the stuff. But that’s simply untrue. “We still love cheese,” said Bernhardt; Sessions nodded by her husband’s side in a recent interview. “It has to be the greatest food.”

They are true turophiles — cheese lovers.

Virginia law school honors Leicester native

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Helping others achieve academic success is nothing new to University of Virginia School of Law student Andrew Manns. A former teacher, Manns, a native of Leicester, Vt., is being honored for helping his peers with their academic work.

The Rosenbloom Award, established by Daniel Rosenbloom ’54 is given every year to honor a student with a strong academic record who has significantly enhanced the academic experience of other law students by volunteering support and assistance to them.
