'Snow' returns in springtime as serviceberry blossoms

Serviceberries are beautiful little understory trees that flourish along the hedgerows of our backcountry roads. For most of the year they are completely anonymous. Then, one spring morning, almost like magic they burst out of the shadows to cover themselves with delicate white flowers — it is like snow in springtime!

2016 Goshen Town Meeting Wrap Up

Posted on March 3, 2016 |
By Addison Independent

GOSHEN — At Goshen’s town meeting on Monday night, residents passed town spending measures, but only after making cuts to selectboard proposals. They backed a general fund budget of $232,673, which was $500 less than proposed. An expected revenue increase from recycling income allowed most of that move, town officials said.

Goshen residents also backed cutting $4,000 of materials and labor from the board’s proposed highway budget and eventually backed $187,200 of spending on the roads.

New OVUU district towns to face first school budget votes

Posted on February 11, 2016 |
By Lee Kahrs

BRANDON — Voters in the eight towns in the Rutland Northeast Supervisory Union school district will see three school budgets on their upcoming town meeting warnings, but it is likely that the vote on only one of those budgets will count.

That’s because those voters last month approved the new Otter Valley Unified Union School District under the Act 46 school consolidation law, but the towns warned school budgets under both the old system and the new one since that vote could still be petitioned for reconsideration.

GOSHEN — A group of winter sports enthusiasts, who generally like to see snowflakes in the air, were happy to see woodchips and sawdust flying in the Green Mountains this past weekend.

A dedicated group of backcountry skiing fanatics took to the area around Goshen Mountain this past Saturday and Sunday with handsaws, clippers and the occasional chainsaw for the first of several planned forays to cut ski glades in the Green Mountain National Forest.

Shade adds tranquility to a garden

Posted on August 17, 2015 |

It’s a common lament: “My garden is shady and boring. All I can grow are hostas!”

I beg to differ. I delight in shady garden spaces — cool, tranquil places for people, and home for plenty of interesting plants.

Dick and I love to retreat, cup of tea in hand, to a favorite garden bench under the trees, a private outdoor room complete with leafy ceiling, richly patterned carpet and a view to the sunny border beyond.
