Maritime Museum chief to talk about boats that shaped history

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh Historical Society presents “A History Of The World In Six Boats” on Sunday, Nov. 13, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Ferrisburgh Historical Society Building (corner of Route 7 and Little Chicago Road).

Join Mike Smiles of the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum for an exploration of the interconnected stories of six boat types that shaped our local and global economies, and weave together a better understanding of man’s quest to exploit our world’s oceans and waterways with craft to leverage our human potential.

Abenaki artifacts on display at Rokeby Museum

FERRISBURGH — The public is invited to come to the Rokeby Museum in Ferrisburgh onSunday, Oct. 23, at3 p.m.when Frederick Wiseman presents his work on Rokeby’s Abenaki artifacts.

Rowland E. Robinson had friends among the Abenaki who camped, hunted and fished along the shores of Lake Champlain. He collected baskets, snowshoes and other items, some of which are unique in New England. Frederick Wiseman will share his research into this little-known archaeological and ethnographic collection, featuring some surprising pieces.

Local woman prepares for lung transplant

FERRISBURGH — The Newell family has a lot riding on an upcoming spaghetti dinner later this month.

Joanne Newell, 62, was diagnosed 12 years ago with pulmonary Langerhans cell histiocytosis, a rare lung disease that causes organ deterioration. Now the damage is so extensive that a double lung transplant is necessary.

The Ferrisburgh resident is about to complete yet another battery of tests to put her in line for double lung transplant surgery at Boston’s Massachusetts General Hospital.

Ferrisburgh bakery/deli moving down Route 7

FERRISBURGH — Soon — possibly by the end of next week — a 10-year-old Ferrisburgh business will move about a third of a mile south along Route 7 to a new home next to The Dock Doctors.

The Ferrisburgh Bake Shop and Deli, founded in 2006 by Ferrisburgh resident Lisa Denton next to the town’s Route 7 post office, will take over renovated space that most recently housed convenience store/gas station/deli Vermont Energy Co., and before then the Little Otter General Store.

Rokeby earns honor from national museum alliance

FERRISBURGH — The American Alliance of Museums has announced the winners in its 2016 Museum Publication Design Competition. Rokeby Museum garnered an honorable mention for its book, “Farming & Feasting with the Robinsons.”

Rokeby was the only small museum (budget less than $750,000) to place in the book category. Other museums honorably mentioned include the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Texas and the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. Rather august company!

Ferrisburgh bans cycling event following complaints

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh selectboard decided at its Sept. 6 meeting it will not again allow the Vermont Senior Games to run bicycle races on town roads.

The organization’s four hours of mid-day races Aug. 27 on Little Chicago, Botsford and Hawkins roads generated one formal complaint from a resident as well as phone calls to board members, according to Selectboard Chairwoman Loretta Lawrence.

Ferrisburgh board, workers at odds with town treasurer

FERRISBURGH — The work of a Ferrisburgh official has come under scrutiny and opened the question of whether the 19th century form of small town government is appropriate to Addison County’s third-largest municipality.

Ferrisburgh town workers have recently told the Ferrisburgh selectboard they are not happy with the performance of Town Treasurer Garrit Smits, alleging that Smits is working too few hours to do his job, leaving his co-workers to perform his work and subjecting the town to late fees.

They wanted something original — something that would reflect the uncommon and striking craftsmanship they have tried to produce in each of their building and design projects.

After several weeks they settled on “Imhotep.”

Rokeby talk to present history behind Quaker meetinghouses

FERRISBURGH — Historic Quaker meetinghouses are iconic pieces of American architecture. Join the Rokeby Museum on Sunday, Sept. 11, at 3 p.m., when Catherine Lavoie examines Quakers’ paradoxical attitudes toward their houses of worship. Lavoie conducted a survey of meetinghouses associated with the Pennsylvania Yearly Meeting and uses the 154 structures as a case study.
