Mt. Abe school bus catches fire, everyone safely evacuated

BRISTOL — No one was injured when a bus carrying the Mount Abraham Union High School track and field team started on fire while taking the youngsters to a meet in Winooski this afternoon.

The Eagles were in Hinesburg when, coach Chris Nezin told the Burlington Free Press, smoke was observed coming from the engine area. The vehicle coasted to a stop and the occupants evacuated through the back door and scrambled a few hundred yards away.

Local attorney presents distracted driving dangers to students

BRISTOL — “How many of your friends drive distracted?” Emily Joselson asked the juniors and seniors assembled in the Mount Abraham Union High School auditorium Monday morning.

A few brave hands rose at first, then scores more, until half of the students thrust a hand into the air.

“What are some examples of distracted driving?” Joselson pressed.

Bristol board takes annual road tour

BRISTOL — The Bristol selectboard took its annual tour of the town’s roads April 29, examining local infrastructure and ordering repairs.

Over the course of three hours the selectboard examined a number of town thoroughfares, including Prince Lane, South Street, Basin Street, Route 116, High Street, Mountain Terrace, Mountain Street, Pine Street, North Street, Plank Road, Upper Notch Road and Pumphouse Road.

Bristol police looking for burglary suspects

BRISTOL — Bristol police are asking residents to be extra vigilant after receiving a report of the theft of items from a car.

Police said someone entered an unlocked vehicle parked in the driveway of a Church Street home and stole cash, fuel, three silver necklaces and a cell phone. Police believe the theft occurred between 11 p.m. on Sunday, May 11, and 6 a.m. on Monday, May 12.

Mt. Abraham student charged with aggravated assault

BRISTOL — Bristol police arrested a student who they allege assaulted another student on school grounds this past Wednesday.

According to police, Bristol resident Jacob True Lathrop, 18, was a passenger in a car that pulled into the Mount Abraham Union High School parking lot on May 7. A student who knew Lathrop reportedly called out to him, allegedly making “teasing remarks.” Police said Lathrop got out of the car, grabbed the schoolmate by the neck and lifted the youngster off the ground.

Teens stuck on public awareness

ADDISON COUNTY — Groups of students from Mount Abraham and Vergennes union high schools took part in a recent “Sticker Shock” day around the county.

The purpose of Sticker Shock is to reinforce public awareness about the minimum drinking age law by placing stickers on packs of beer larger than a six-pack. The goal of this project is to discourage adults and older peers (those who are 21 or over) from providing alcohol to minors.

ANeSU Fine Arts Festival set for this week

BRISTOL — The Addison Northeast Supervisory Union will be holding its 28th annual Fine Arts Festival at Mount Abraham Union Middle/High School May 6-8. This event features the accomplishments of the students from the district in visual and performing arts. The results of a year of teaching and learning will be shared with the five-town community through displays and performances.

Retailer of used books, instruments moves to new location in Bristol

BRISTOL — Recycled Reading of Vermont is moving to a larger space in Bristol’s downtown, and will expand its operation.

The store, which sells used books, CDs, DVDs and musical instruments, isn’t moving far — in fact, the new space is just across the street from its current location at 25 Main Street. The store will occupy the space that used to house Better Planet.

Owner Melissa Hernandez, who opened the store in 2011, said things were starting to feel crowded in her shop, so she went looking for a new home for her business.

Conservation project preserves land north of Bristol from development

BRISTOL — The Vermont Land Trust and The Nature Conservancy this week announced they have completed the first phase of the Bristol Gateway Conservation Project. The two organizations had been working with the community on the project for many years and recently completed a successful local fundraising campaign. Now the 346-acre Farr property — comprising farmland, forest, and a natural area — is protected from future development.

The second phase of the project, the conservation of the adjacent Fuller farm, will be completed in early summer.
