Program marks 30 years of summer fun for kids

VERGENNES — This year marks important milestones in the full-day summer camps of the Mary Johnson Children’s Center. The program has operated for 30 years in Middlebury, 25 years in Bristol, and 15 in Vergennes.

Maybe 30 years ago, kids weren’t wiring bananas into piano keyboards or making solar robots, as they’ll do this summer? But then as now, the pioneering program provides an important resource for local families.

Bristol police department eyes unionization

“We have to look at our options,” said Bristol Patrolman Josh Otey. “Most police departments in Vermont have union representation.”

Trash in town is a problem for Bristol

BRISTOL — Garbage is on the minds of Bristol town officials.

Town Administrator Therese Kirby recently reminded Bristol residents that the selectboard established a policy of “Pack in and Pack out” for the town parks more than two years ago. This has been a long held practice of the state of Vermont and the federal government for state and national parks.

The town does have at least eight combination recycling and trash containers placed around the downtown, and a licensed hauler empties them every Friday.

'Dinoman' to present fun fossil facts July 12

BRISTOL — A collaborative effort by the 5-town librarians is bringing some summer fun (and learning) for kids to Holley Hall in Bristol this Wednesday afternoon.

“Dinoman” will offer a trip through the Mesozoic era — a journey of magic, merry mayhem, and magnificent props. Think BIG!

How do we know dinosaurs were here? What is a fossil? How are they made? This program provides fun and informative answers to curious kids of  all ages.

Mount Abe school district settles teacher and support staff contracts

BRISTOL — School boards and unions representing teachers and support staff in the Bristol-area schools late last month ratified new teacher and support staff contracts that cover the next two school years.

On the whole, employees will see pay increases in each of the two years and their contribution to health insurance will rise after Jan. 1, 2018.

Bristol considers firearms law

BRISTOL — Selectboard members are considering an ordinance that would regulate the discharge of firearms in Bristol. The ordinance, if passed, would be a first of its kind in the town.

The local law, which the Bristol selectboard heard about at their June 26 meeting, would prohibit firing a gun “within a safety zone of 500 feet from another person’s/entity’s residence, building, place of business or camper in the town of Bristol.”

Longtime Bristol police chief to retire this August

BRISTOL — Bristol Police Chief Kevin Gibbs will retire at the end of August.

Gibbs officially announced his retirement at the Bristol Police Department staff meeting last Tuesday, June 27, saying: “It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the community of Bristol.”

Gibbs has served on the Bristol police force for 31 years.

Five-town arts guild asks local donors to take a seat

BRISTOL — Attendees at next week’s Fourth of July celebration in Bristol will get yet another chance to be sitting pretty — by bidding on one-of-a-kind, work-of-art chairs painted by local artists. The 5 Town Friends of the Arts’ “Chair-ity” event is part of the group’s annual silent auction fundraiser.

“Funky chairs can be really fun in your house,” said Chair-ity organizer Vera Ryersbach.

Six local artists are contributing this year’s chairs they have painted in a variety of creative and funky ways:
