Bristol Police Log: Police lead active shooter training for emergency services

BRISTOL — On Oct. 24 two Bristol police officers led a training seminar on active shooter response for Addison County emergency services.

Meanwhile, Bristol police conducted foot patrol downtown on Oct. 23, 24, 25, 26 and 27; on Oct. 25 an officer secured one building. Police foot patrols at Bristol Elementary School and nearby areas took place each day from Oct. 23 to 27; and security checks of Mount Abraham Union High School occurred daily Oct. 23 to 29 except the 27th.

Police offices completed fingerprint requests on Oct. 17, 24, 25 and 27.

ANESU voters reject $36 million Mount Abe building bond

BRISTOL — Addison Northeast Supervisory Union residents on Thursday rejected a $36.6 million renovation plan for Mount Abraham Union High School by a 1,261 to 1,168 tally.

The close, 93-vote margin of defeat has provided project proponents with a silver lining sense that a third vote could be the charm for getting five-town residents to endorse major repairs to their almost 50-year-old secondary school building.

Bristol man charged with child sexual assault

BRISTOL — A 61-year-old Bristol man last week pleaded innocent to a charge that he sexually assaulted a five-year-old girl.

Kendell Ducharme, 61, a registered sex offender, entered the plea to a charge of aggravated sexual assault on a victim younger than 13 in Rutland Superior Court, criminal division, on Wednesday, Nov. 1. He could face 10 years to life in jail and a fine of up to $50,000 if convicted.

Nov. 11 craft fair to benefit Mount Abe Project Graduation

BRISTOL — As its sole fundraiser of the year, Mt. Abraham’s Project Graduation will hold a craft fair at MAUHS on Saturday, Nov. 11, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Mt.  Abraham introduced Project Graduation — a substance free graduation celebration — to the state of Vermont in 1987 by traveling to other Vermont high schools and informing senior classes about the importance of a substance free celebration and the opportunities that existed.

BRISTOL — Refugees are ordinary people caught in an extraordinary situation. Learn about the transition faced by refugees who arrive in our state each year to find a safe haven on Thursday, Nov. 9, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Lawrence Memorial Library in Bristol. The presentation, “First Welcome for Refugees: Laying Solid Foundations for Renewed Lives in the U.S.,” is the latest installment of the One World Library Project and is supported in part by the Vermont Humanities Council.

Bristol Police Log: Man cited for DUI, second offense

BRISTOL — On Oct. 21 Bristol police arrested 38-year-old Jeremy Charles Denton of White Water, Wis., and cited him for driving under the influence, second offense.

Officers were notified of a vehicle traveling southbound on Monkton Road toward Bristol after another motorist observed erratic operation. Police stopped the vehicle on Cove Road in Bristol and noted signs of impairment.

The driver, identified as Denton, submitted to field sobriety exercises and was subsequently taken into custody on suspicion of DUI.

Bristol food shelf looks to Saturday's Fill the Firehouse Food Drive

BRISTOL — The cupboards are just about bare at Bristol’s Have a Heart Community Food Shelf. Literally. With the exception of some canned and packaged foods in reserve for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners, last Friday’s regular monthly distribution cleaned out the food pantry that serves the 5-town area.

Organizers of new Bristol Trail Network celebrate accomplishments

BRISTOL — The group building a trail around Bristol hosted a party at the Bristol Recreation Club pavilion on Oct. 14 to celebrate the progress made this year toward completing the project.

The 24 people who attended walked the section of trail behind Mount Abraham Union High School with amazing views to the west, and then had a great potluck lunch.

BRISTOL — It’s lunchtime at Mount Abraham Union High School and the large cafeteria is abuzz with students eating, chatting, laughing and catching a few fun moments with friends before the next bell rings and they troop off to classes.

More than anything, it’s loud. Deafeningly so. But it’s a lively loud, with so many students happy to be out of class, get some food, sit with buddies and take a break.

Route 116 paving will delay some drivers in Bristol, Starksboro next week

STARKSBORO/BRISTOL — Drivers may encounter delays when traveling along Route 116 between Bristol and Starksboro this week as repaving of the highway continues.

Construction officials said that the week of Oct. 23 will mark the last week of paving for the six-and-a-half-mile section of road between Bristol village near the Lord’s Prayer Rock to just south of Robinson School in Starksboro village. Final paving is scheduled to start Monday in Bristol and progress north, weather permitting.
