BRANDON — The race for the Brandon, Pittsford and Sudbury House Seat is heating up with four candidates vying for the two available spots — and three of the four are newcomers.

The district has two House seats in the Legislature. The open seat is the result of Democratic Rep. Steve Carr’s decision this spring not to run for re-election in November. The other seat is held by Republican Rep. Butch Shaw of Pittsford, who has announced he is running for re-election.

BRANDON — Silent film with live music returns to Brandon Town Hall on Saturday, June 9, at 7 p.m. with “Steamboat Bill Jr.” (1928), a classic comedy starring Buster Keaton, one of the era’s top performers. The series allows local movie-goers to experience silent film the way its makers originally intended: on the big screen, with live music, and with an audience.

“If you put the experience back together, you can see why movies caused such excitement,” said Dennis Marden, president of the Friends of Brandon Town Hall.

Josh Collier is a force of operatic nature. The opera tenor has been a Brandon resident for just over a year, but in that short time has not only embraced the town, but embarked on a mission to bring opera to Brandon. A rainbow caresses Woods Market Garden in Brandon_0702.jpg

It was already the third week of April when “Old Man Winter” decided to pay us one more snowy visit. But I was in a springtime paradise, inside a vast tunnel greenhouse surrounded by hundreds of vigorous five-foot high tomato plants.

I was at Woods Market Garden (just a couple of miles south of Brandon and not far from where I live in Goshen) and the owner, Jon Satz, was graciously giving me a guided tour.

Home-grown tomatoes in early June

BRANDON — Public backlash from residents over a proposed 25-acre solar array just outside downtown Brandon has led the developer to seek an alternative site — possibly in town, perhaps elsewhere.

In a letter to the Vermont Public Utility Commission dated March 30 and shared with the Brandon selectboard last week, Conti Solar of Edison, N.J., requested that it be allowed to switch sites due to “significant opposition to the project from neighboring property owners and residents due to aesthetic concerns.”
