BRANDON — With the start of the football season less than three weeks away, the man hired to helm the Otter Valley football team has changed his mind.

OV announced in June that Mount St. Joseph Academy Assistant Principal and teacher Phil Hall would be the next head coach of the Otters following Coach Jim Hill’s decision not to return for another season.

Hall was excited about the position, telling The Brandon Reporter after his hiring was announced that it was his “dream job.”

BRANDON — A quaint, old Vermont town is a great place to live for any historian, and Kevin Thornton knows that better than anyone. The Civil War and Vermont history expert has been mining the people, stories and archives of Brandon’s past for years. In fact, he made a documentary film, “Death in the Wilderness — A Love Story,” about a Brandon widow who trekked to a Civil War burial site to retrieve her husband’s body and return it to the Green Mountain State. The film is being screened at the Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival, Aug. 24-27.

Lyme disease cases surge this time of year; local mom spreads awareness

Posted on June 22, 2017 |

BRANDON/MONTPELIER — While May is officially Lyme Awareness Month, it might as well be renamed Lyme Awareness Summer 2017.

Or better yet, Tick Awareness — March to November.

That’s because with warmer, shorter winters and higher rainfall amounts, black-legged ticks are multiplying and moving north. Vermont has been experiencing a steady increase in the number of Lyme disease cases and in the last few years earned the dubious distinction of having the highest per capita incidence of Lyme disease in the U.S.

BRANDON — The Otter Valley United Union School Board and the Rutland Northeast Supervisory Union Board unanimously voted to impose a contract on paraeducators and bus drivers at a joint meeting on June 13.

The move came a year after the

last contract agreement and 10 months of negotiations, fact finding and mediation. An impasse was declared in November.

Each side returned to the table on May 30 to try and settle on an agreement, but the board’s final offer was rejected by the paras and driver’s union members.
