Brandon's Rep. Steve Carr won't run, but Seth Hopkins will

BRANDON — Democrat State Rep. Steve Carr of Brandon will not run for re-election to the Vermont House in November, but Republican Seth Hopkins will.

Hopkins notified The Brandon Reporter of his intent to run for Carr’s seat on Monday. Hopkins, who is chair of the Brandon selectboard, ran for the first time in 2012 and lost to Carr.

Proposal for Brandon solar array criticized; visibility, use of farm land draw fire

BRANDON — A proposed 25-acre solar project just a mile outside downtown Brandon has raised concerns of residents and town officials alike.

The project is planned for two, 12.5-acre parcels at the intersection of Country Club Road and Park Street Extension. The land in question, owned by Bob Brooks, is agricultural and has been used to grow corn for decades.

Conti Solar, an Edison, N.J.-based solar company, is proposing the 2.2-megawatt project, which will produce enough electricity to power 500 homes.

Sewer leak in Brandon flows into waterway

BRANDON — Old pipes and erosion led to a break in a Brandon sewer pipe, spilling over 1 million gallons of raw sewage into the Neshobe River.

The break was discovered on March 7, and the spill was estimated to have begun Feb. 22, two weeks earlier.

Brandon Town Manager Dave Atherton said the area around the pipe, down past Mill Lane almost to the post office, had eroded and exposed the 12-inch concrete sewer pipe, which dates back to the 1930s. The pipe was broken open in two places where it runs along the Neshobe between two manholes.

OV schools reject guns

BRANDON — At their recent annual school meeting, residents of the Brandon-area schools approved a non-binding resolution calling for the district not to allow teachers and staff to possess guns in the Brandon, Leicester, Whiting and other district schools.

Brandon street to get million-dollar makeover

BRANDON — A plan to fix pothole-laden main street in Brandon moved forward on Town Meeting Day when town residents OK’d a funding of a renovation plan.

The $1.4 million bond question to pay for infrastructure improvements to Park Street passed overwhelmingly, 488-123.

Brandon recognizes Kirbys for service to town

BRANDON — “I just want to tell you what it’s like to be a celebrity in Brandon.”

Dick Kirby took the microphone at Brandon town meeting Monday evening with his wife, Debbie, after the couple was honored in this year’s Brandon Town Report. Kirby said that after he got word of the dedication, he met with his weekly coffee group of older gentlemen in Brandon, who call themselves, “Sick, Lame and Lazy.”

New security features added to the front entrance of OVUHS

BRANDON — Major changes are planned for the front entrance at Otter Valley Union High School in light of the recent school shooting threat in Fair Haven and the tragic mass shooting in Parkland, Fla.

The plan comes just days after Gov. Phil Scott issued a memo to legislators proposing several gun restrictions and school safety measures, including school security reviews and grant funding for security improvements.

OV district teachers agree to new contract

BRANDON — The first district-wide teacher contract that covers the eight schools in the Rutland Northeast Supervisory Union has been ratified.

On Feb. 13, Rutland Northeast Education Association members overwhelmingly approved a new collective bargaining agreement for the 171 teachers employed by the Otter Valley Unified Union School District, the Barstow Unified Union School District, and the Rutland Northeast Supervisory Union.

Brandon police take steps at OV after Fair Haven threat

FAIR HAVEN/BRANDON — A link to the school shooting threat that originated in Fair Haven last week prompted Brandon police to take action at Otter Valley Union High School. In the end, though, authorities said no one in Brandon was in immediate danger from the threat.

With an eerie echo of the Parkland, Fla., high school shooting on Feb. 14, Vermont State Police on Feb. 15 arrested 18-year-old Jack Sawyer of Poultney for allegedly making threats and plans to commit a mass shooting at Fair Haven Union High School.
