Gary Baker seeks return to Middlebury selectboard

MIDDLEBURY — Former Middlebury Selectman Gary Baker hopes to return to the board this March by winning one of two spots up for grabs on Town Meeting Day, March 6.

As the Addison Independent went to press on Friday, Baker and incumbent Selectman Farhad Khan were the only residents to have confirmed their plans to run for the board. Incumbent Selectwoman Susan Shashok has decided not to run for re-election.

Bristol bakery starts new chapter with new owner

BRISTOL — For almost eight years, Celina Ellison had been a big part of the recipe that has produced sweet success for Bristol Bakery on Main Street. Brothers Kevin and Doug Harper picked Ellison as their “house manager,” a role she would perform at both the original bakery on Bristol’s Main Street and at a Hinesburg spin-off that is also doing very well.

Well, the longtime manager has now become the new owner of the bakery, which she has renamed “Bristol Cliffs Café.”

Lawmakers review Middlebury rail bridges project, with higher price tag

MONTPELIER — Members of the Vermont House and Senate Transportation Committees last week took testimony on the latest plans for replacing Middlebury’s two downtown rail bridges, and lawmakers appear content to have the project — now estimated at $71 million — begin as scheduled this spring.

The meeting, held last Thursday at the Vermont Statehouse, featured virtually all of the major players in what has been a multi-year planning effort to replace the 1920s-era Main Street and Merchants Row bridges over the railroad.

Porter creates new blueprint for growth on medical center campus

MIDDLEBURY — Porter Medical Center has completed a long-range facilities plan that recommends a series of capital projects for the next decade that include a new medical office building, a more modern emergency department, expanded lab and imaging facilities, and a renovated front entrance to the hospital.

Middlebury professor is 'Taken' with role on TV action series

MIDDLEBURY — A lot of folks wouldn’t mind walking a few miles in Alexander Draper’s shoes.

Most days, this associate professor of theater can be found imparting the finer points of acting to eager, aspiring thespians at Middlebury College, Draper’s own alma mater. The prodigal son returned to Middlebury more than a decade ago after having spent 15 years displaying his acting chops and paying his dues in the City that Never Sleeps.

That new amenity would provide aspiring inventors with the equipment, facilities and guidance they need to get their original projects off the drawing board and into prototype form.

Homeless man found dead not far from Middlebury shelter

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police believe alcohol played a significant role in the tragic death of a local homeless man found on the town green during the early morning of Saturday, Jan. 13.

Police identified the deceased as 45-year-old Suad Teocanin.

Middlebury Police Sgt. Michael Christopher said Teocanin had been living in the Middlebury area in recent years, working kitchen jobs at various restaurants. At the time of his death, he had been working at downtown Middlebury’s Two Brothers Tavern.

5 Towns to vote Town Meeting Day on $29.5 million Mount Abe repair bond

BRISTOL — It’s official.

Five-town voters on Town Meeting Day will cast ballots on a revised, $29.5 million renovation plan for Mount Abraham Union High School that would address nine project priorities touted by school officials, albeit to a lesser degree than the $36.6 million proposal that area residents defeated last November.

Big new patient records software OK'd for Porter Medical Center
