ACSD seeks input on schools' space needs

By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY —Addison Central School District residents in 2016 took the major step of consolidating their educational governance structure from eight boards to one. District leaders argued the move would lead to more efficient and less costly delivery of public education.

Two years later, ACSD officials are preparing a “facilities master plan” that could further reduce district expenses and offer better educational opportunities.

CASTLETON — Mount Abraham Union High School softball pitcher Audrey Shahan did just about everything one could ask during Friday’s Division II tile game against Fair Haven at Castleton University.

She began by singing the national anthem and then went on to deliver a nine-strikeout, complete-game performance in leading the No. 1 Eagles to a 6-4 win over the No. 2 Slaters and their second-straight title.

Shahan also collected two hits and two RBIs in her own support.

Sen. Bray reflects on 2018 season; hopes to win another term

Bray, Chris ONLINE 2010.jpg

MONTPELIER — Sen. Chris Bray, D-New Haven, was thinking big when he first ran for the Vermont Senate six years ago. His goals were pretty much all predicated on producing systematic changes to Vermont’s agricultural, economic and environmental landscapes.

So it’s no coincidence he has, during his legislative career, taken a lead role in the Farm-to-Plate, renewable energy, Act 250, and clean water bills — initiatives designed to prove their worth in the next five to 10 years.

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury officials have long chanted the mantra “We’re all in this together,” when it comes to enduring the massive downtown rail bridges project that will create some hardship before culminating in a more alluring and utilitarian village core by 2021.

So it’s no coincidence that the citizens’ group that will help the downtown weather the construction storm is calling itself “Neighbors Together.”

County election slate takes shape

Posted on June 4, 2018 |
By John Flowers

ADDISON COUNTY — An Aug. 14 primary election will be required to whittle down a surplus of Democrats competing for Addison County sheriff and the two seats representing the Addison-4 district in the Vermont House.

Meanwhile, three other districts will feature no races at all for the general election, barring an eleventh-hour bid by an independent or write-in candidate. Incumbent lawmakers representing the Addison-1, Addison-2, Addison-3 and Addison-5 House districts currently have no competition for new two-year terms in Montpelier.

Kulhowvick to retire after 47 years at MUMS

MIDDLEBURY — George Kulhowvick was an intimidating force on the football field during his high school and college years. He’d just as soon run you over as go around you to get into the end zone.

It’s a far cry from the classroom persona that “Mr. K” exudes in his Middlebury Union Middle School social studies class. While he practices some of the leadership principles he learned on the football field, Kulhowvick is known for being a fun-loving guy with a genuine interest in the subject matter he’s teaching.
