LINCOLN — Nestled in a Lincoln nook, just between the western slopes of Mount Ellen and Mount Abraham, exists the axis of what the Halby family intends to be an innovative utopia: Zeno Mountain Farm.

The setting, which consists of a central farmhouse surrounded by a treehouse village, is home to a unique multi-age camp that its operators believe creates a comfortable atmosphere for people with disabilities to comfortably express their diverse natures.

By Andrew Stein

BRISTOL — The numbers are in, and this year’s Three-Day Stampede is one for the records.

In its 21st year, Bristol’s Cystic Fibrosis Foundation fund-raiser has generated more than $102,000 in donations, smashing the previous record of $100,000 set in 2009.

“We’re already inching up to the $103,000 mark,” said event co-founder Bonita Bedard. “Donations come in that we don’t expect and we always get a little bit afterwards.”

Giant hogweed comes to Vermont

Posted on August 4, 2011 |

ADDISON COUNTY — What could be worse than poison parsnip taking over local fields of Queen Anne’s lace?

Possibly the arrival of its big, bad, cousin giant hogweed, which causes second degree burns similar to poison parsnip when its sap comes in contact with one’s skin and the sun.

Weekly Rider: Sunset loop

Few Addison County views are more breathtaking than the golden sun dipping down the backs of the Adirondacks at sunset, veiling the rolling farmland and surface of Lake Champlain in a golden cloak of luminescence.

One of my favorite times to head out on a north-south bike loop is during this period. Not only is the air a bit cooler, but you find yourself in the center of numerous sunset vistas as you breeze on by.

This week’s Weekly Rider features a Middlebury to Vergennes loop called sunset loop.

VERMONT — Soaring temperatures swept across New England last week scorching Addison County, Vermont and the entire six-state region.

While thermometers were reporting temperatures way above normal, other meters also gave unusually high readings: Electricity demand in the region was just shy of record.

Bristol's downtown designation renewed

BRISTOL — Downtown Bristol has been a state Designated Downtown district since 2006. Every five years, the Bristol Downtown Community Partnership is required to apply for a renewal of the town’s designation.

On Monday, before the Bristol selectboard’s meeting, Bristol Town Administrator Bill Bryant and Carol Wells, director of the Bristol Downtown Community Partnership (BDCP) and a selectboard member, made the trek to Montpelier to defend Bristol’s downtown title for the first time.

MIDDLEBURY — Hauling across the globe from St. Petersburg, Russia, to Middlebury every summer since 2007 is, in some ways, a return home for Nina Kostyuk, a Russian professor at the Middlebury Russian Language School.

After 41 years studying and teaching in Russia’s second-largest city, the trip to Addison County brings Kostyuk back to her childhood growing up in a village outside the southern Ukrainian city of Odessa.

ADDISON COUNTY — A hometown boy is back in town and looking to make big headway this year in solar technology across Addison County.

Chris Eaton is a Middlebury Union High School graduate and a 1999 Middlebury College alumnus. He co-founded the local company Salamander Construction in 2004, and two years later followed his future wife down to Massachusetts, where he started another construction company, called Ducksholm Builders in Nantucket.

State offers incentive for solar panel users

Posted on July 25, 2011 |
By Andrew Stein

ADDISON COUNTY — A new law requires electric utilities give a credit to their customers who produce some of their own power through home solar power panels. The credit is 20 cents for every kilowatt hour their units produce.

When the roughly 14-cent-per-kWh cost of power purchased from Central Vermont Public Service (CVPS) or Green Mountain Power (GMP) is factored into the mix, a solar customer will receive an approximate 6-cent credit called an “adder” for every kWh used and produced.

Weekly Rider: Triangle de Midd, Cornwall, Weybridge

Posted on July 22, 2011 | Blog Category:

People from across the country consider Addison County a bike Mecca. It’s home to steep climbs, 30-mile rollers and spectacular views. It also presents an extremely varied set of riding options to a wide range of cyclists, from those hammer heads looking to climb multiple mountain gaps to those bikers who haven’t been out in years. One of my favorite shorter rides in the area is what I call the Triangle de Midd, Cornwall, Weybridge.

Length: 10.3 miles
