Take down bird feeders in spring

MONTPELIER — The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department says warm spring weather and melting snows will cause bears to come out of their winter dens in search of food. The department recommends taking down bird feeders on April 1 to avoid attracting them.

Bears are very fond of suet and bird seed, especially black oil sunflower seed. Bringing feeders in at night doesn’t work, because bears will still feed on seed that is spilled on the ground.

Scholar to speak on blending religions

MIDDLEBURY — Why do American yogis blend Hinduism, Buddhism and Native American religions in their homilies and practice? More generally, why does American spirituality routinely blend indigenous and Asian traditions as evidenced by the “New Age” section of the average American bookstore?

Middlebury College visiting lecturer Amanda Lucia will address these questions in an April 6 lecture titled, “Romanticizing the Premodern: Charting Indices of Indigenous and Asian Religions in Contemporary American Spirituality.”

Amphibian guides needed in Salisbury

SALISBURY — In early spring amphibians abandon the protection of their upland wintering sites to move to lower, wetter sites where they gather and lay eggs. Some amphibians put themselves in jeopardy by crossing roads to get to their reproductive sites. Depending on local vehicle traffic, entire amphibian populations can be wiped out in the process.

Village2Village Project to host benefit dinner April 1

BRISTOL — These three pictures are taken of the same little Ugandan boy, over six weeks. Emergency surgery and four weeks of enriched nutrition have saved three-year-old Elvis’s life. But he needs two more surgeries and a lot more food before he grows up into the healthy little boy that he can be. The “Old Bones,” a country and gospel music group, want to help.

Literary magazine to hold release party March 28

VERGENNES — After receiving submissions of photos, stories, poems, artwork — and even a song — from across all towns in Addison County, Zig Zag Lit Mag is ready to release its second issue.

In celebration, the editing board has invited the public to attend a release party as a chance to build relationships between local writers and artists. Zig Zag was founded to support these artists, and encourages their readers to do so as well, with their motto: Read Local. Write Local.

Tour du Mont Blanc slideshow to take place at Starksboro library March 29

Extension to offer food safety course March 30

BURLINGTON — A two-hour class will be offered at two locations to provide food processors with an update on regulatory compliance for food facilities under the requirements of the Food Safety Modernization Act.

University of Vermont (UVM) Extension, in collaboration with the Vermont Small Business Development Center, will offer the class on March 30 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Community College of  Vermont, 145 Billings Farm Rd., White River Junction, and April 4 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Vermont Technical Center, 201 Lawrence Place, Williston.

Addison Independent still preferred for town news

MIDDLEBURY — At a March 21 meeting, the Middlebury selectboard reviewed town meeting poll results and feedback. Fifty-nine percent of 201 responders said they preferred to be informed on town news via “ newspaper,” followed by Front Porch Forum (38 percent) and town listserv (36 percent).

Forty-nine percent of respondents said they wanted to learn more about the upcoming rail bridges replacement project and proposed Ilsley Library expansion; next on the list was the town plan update at 36 percent.
