Vergennes elementary wins healthy school food challenge

VERGENNES — Vergennes Union Elementary School this month was honored by the USDA Food and Nutrition Service with a HealthierUS School Challenge Bronze award, which the school received for its multi-year efforts to support and improve the health of its students.

According to the School Challenge press release, VUES earned its honor, which comes with a $500 cash prize, for featuring healthy items on its menus and emphasizing physical education and activity. A USDA representative will visit VUES to make an official presentation.

Tiger boys' hockey earns victory in OT

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ hockey team worked overtime on Saturday to defeat visiting Brattleboro, 2-1.

The Tigers improved to 5-3-1 with the win and moved into fourth place in Division II.

Tyler Crowingshield netted the game-winner 2:55 into overtime. Colton Leno set up that goal and also scored the Tigers’ first goal. Tiger goalie Doug DeLorenzo backstopped the win with 19 saves.

The Tigers host D-I power Burr & Burton on Wednesday and D-II rival St. Johnsbury on Friday, both at 7 p.m.

Panther men's hockey defeats Norwich and Plattsburgh

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College men’s hockey team knocked off the Nos. 2 and 3 teams in NCAA Division III this past weekend, rivals Norwich and Plattsburgh, respectively, and improved to 6-6-2 in the process.

The Panthers will look to build on the momentum when they return to NESCAC play this weekend: They host Bowdoin at 7 p.m. on Friday and Colby at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

On this past Saturday, the Panthers blanked visiting Norwich, 3-0. The No. 2-ranked Cadets dropped to 14-2-2.

In hoop, Otter Valley boys win at Eagles' expense, other local teams fall

ADDISON COUNTY — The Otter Valley boys defeated visiting Mount Abraham to highlight local high school basketball play late last week.

In other action, the Middlebury boys, Vergennes girls and OV girls all came up short in a light schedule due to exams.

OTTER BOYS VS. EAGLES

In Brandon on Friday, OV’s John Winslow scored 20 points as OV coasted past the winless Eagles, 59-21. Emmett Thurston added 11 as the Otters improved to 8-2.

Tiger girls' hockey still in first in D-I after win

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ hockey team defeated visiting Rice, 2-1, on Saturday, to hold onto first place in Division I with a 10-2 record. Northfield is in second at 10-2-1.

The Tigers face two tough home games this week: Fourth-place Burr & Burton, the team the Tigers edged in the 2014 D-II final, visits on Wednesday, and fifth-place St. Albans, a perennial D-I power, visits on Friday. Both games are set for 5 p.m.

MLK Day to be celebrated in Middlebury with music and dance

MIDDLEBURY — This Martin Luther King Day, Jan. 19, at 8 p.m. when lights go up in Mead Chapel at Middlebury College, the audience will see and hear something new in the college’s traditional celebration of Dr. King’s legacy: a gospel choir of Middlebury College students. 

Led by Appalachian State University Gospel Choir Director Keith McCutchen, students will present a short program of traditional gospel and spiritual tunes in original arrangements by McCutchen.

Photographer for National Geographic to deliver talk

MIDDLEBURY — The annual meeting of the Green Mountain Club Bread Loaf Section will be held on Saturday, Jan. 24, at 5 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of the Congregational Church in Middlebury. Photographer James P. Blair will give a talk titled “Being There.”

Blair worked as a staff photographer for National Geographic magazine for 30 years. Forty-six articles carried his byline and more than 2,000 of his photos have appeared within its covers.

ACTR dispatcher Marcia Brown retires in December

MIDDLEBURY — After 16 years as a dispatcher at Addison County Transit Resources (ACTR) in Middlebury, Marcia Brown retired in December 2014. During her last weeks at ACTR, Brown was showered with cards and phone calls from community members and riders she had served so well. An open house luncheon was also held in her honor at the Community Transportation Center.

Two-thirds of Vermont farmers join dairy insurance program

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The USDA on Monday announced that 582 Vermont dairy farms — 67 percent of Vermont’s registered dairy farms — had enrolled in a new financial safety net called the Margin Protection Program (MPP). Created by the 2014 Farm Bill, the voluntary program offers financial assistance to participating farmers when the margin — the difference between the price of milk and national average feed costs — falls below the coverage levels selected by individual farmers.
