Monkton asks Mt. Abe bond questions

Posted on October 19, 2017 |
By Gaen Murphree

MONKTON — Some citizens at Monday’s Addison Northeast Supervisory Union information session on a proposed $35 million school building bond were all for it. But a question about the cost to taxpayers proved to be a sticking point for some at the meeting.

Attendees wrestled with the statement by supporters of the Mount Abraham Union High School renovation plan that the proposed 2017 $35 million bond would result in a smaller tax increase than the proposed 2014 $32.6 million bond that voters defeated.

n Creating art Vergennes LEAD printing8410.jpg

VERGENNES — Heavy equipment and fine art don’t always go together like, say, peanut butter and jelly, but on Saturday a steamroller in the Kennedy Brothers parking lot on Main Street in Vergennes lured artists from as far away as Burlington and Barre.

Specifically, printmakers showed up, and even more specifically printmakers with bigger pieces that require major pressure to compress two pieces of plywood together to transfer ink from larger wood or linoleum blocks onto paper.

Vergennes to consider local option taxes

Posted on October 16, 2017 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — The Vergennes City Council at its Tuesday meeting last week agreed to Mayor Michael Daniels’ suggestion to look at the idea of adopting local option taxes in the city.

Local option taxes piggyback on state sales-and-use or rooms-and-meals taxes by adding 1 percent for local revenue to either or both. Daniels said a study conducted a number of years ago, when the city briefly considered the idea, showed that such a tax could raise $100,000 a year for Vergennes.

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury’s efforts to re-boot its economic development efforts in town took a detour on Tuesday when the selectboard learned no one had stepped forward to join a new “Economic Health Committee.”

The board will instead ask participants on some of the town’s past business-promotion groups to serve on a panel that will specifically preside over the community’s new revolving loan fund and review Middlebury’s tax stabilization policy.

And the new task force will have to hit the ground running.
