CORNWALL — Cornwall’s historic one-room schoolhouse at 114 South Bingham St. is being sold to someone who has become quite familiar with the building during the past several years.

Addison Central Supervisory Union Business Manager David Boucher confirmed on Thursday that the former school building has been sold to Allison Quinttus — who happens to reside next to the building.

“She respects the property, and I know she understands the historic significance of the building,” Boucher said.

NexBridge to make its pitch for downtown Middlebury property

Posted on October 8, 2015 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday stopped short of endorsing NexBridge as the prospective developer of town-owned land behind the Ilsley Library, instead opting to invite the local group in to further explain its proposal for a multi-story, L-shaped building on the Bakery Lane parcel that would include retail, office and residential uses and associated parking.

NexBridge is the only team currently in the running to develop the so-called “Economic Development Initiative,” or EDI, property off Bakery Lane, behind the Ilsley.

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont Gas on Wednesday morning announced a memorandum of understanding with the Vermont Department of Public Service placing a limit of $134 million on the amount it will seek from its ratepayers for expenses related to the Addison Natural Gas Project pipeline.

MIDDLEBURY — “I admire you guys, I really do. It’s great to be here,” Congressman Peter Welch told a group of Middlebury College student activists Monday as he met with them to discuss ways to address climate change and share his reflections on effective leadership in the face of tough challenges.

Repeatedly throughout the discussion, Welch, 68, thanked the students for their leadership and compared the work of today’s young activists on climate change to the battles his own generation waged in the Civil Rights Movement.

Farmer finds good crop for county's clay soils — rice

Posted on October 8, 2015 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

FERRISBURGH — Boundbrook Farms and Good Companion Bakery owner Erik Andrus didn’t see himself as a commercial rice grower a decade ago when he set up shop on a 110-acre Ferrisburgh farm that lies a mile or so east of Vergennes.

In addition to founding what is now a successful bakery, Andrus was convinced he wanted to establish a new small-farm niche. What he had in mind was wheat for his baking and maybe barley for Vermont’s microbrewers, not rice.

Plus the celebration of President Laurie L. Patton’s investiture on Saturday and Sunday will include an exciting lineup of live music, a provocative series of panel discussions, and a formal ceremony filled with all the pageantry that has come down from the halls of medieval academia to modern institutions of higher learning.

MIDDLEBURY — The regular changing of the guard within Vermont’s local courthouses has brought a new presiding judge to Addison County — Samuel Hoar Jr., who replaces Judge Robert Mello, who has been transferred to Franklin County Superior Court.

Addison County’s new judge hopes to be spending the next two years in Addison County’s courthouse, and he does not mind getting a change of scenery on a regular basis.

Down the drain: Street stencil reminds us that waste goes to lake

Posted on October 5, 2015 |
By Gaen Murphree

BRISTOL — As merrymakers began arriving for the Bristol Harvest Festival on Saturday, Sept. 26, a group of 14 volunteers with the New Haven River Anglers Association fanned out along Bristol streets on a serious mission.

In groups of twos and threes they stopped at storm drains in the village center, laid down a stencil, and painted a message for anyone who deposits waste — fluids and solids — into the gutters:

“Keep It Clean, Drains To River.”

Falcons come back from the brink in Vermont

Posted on October 5, 2015 |
By Gaen Murphree

PeregrineSFaccio.jpg

ADDISON COUNTY — Forty-five years ago, a lone male peregrine falcon spotted at Mt. Pisgah above Lake Willoughby was the last wild falcon left in Vermont. The last. The entire species had been wiped out (technically “extirpated,” not extinct), not only in Vermont, not only in the Northeast, but throughout its entire range east of the Mississippi.

This year, state wildlife biologists reported 44 cliff-nesting pairs producing a record 67 chicks — several in Addison County.
