Local forest groups team up to honor Levi Duclos

MIDDLEBURY — Several local organizations coordinated this summer to honor Levi Duclos, the New Haven teen who died on a Ripton trail in January 2012, by rerouting a section of trail to make it more accessible to hikers.

Members of the Green Mountain Club, the Long Trail Patrol, the U.S. Forest Service and other organizations repaired the Abbey Pond Trail in Middlebury, which is within the Green Mountain National Forest.

Small businesses gird for transition to health insurance marketplace

ADDISON COUNTY — State officials have spent almost three years tuning up Vermont Health Connect (VHC), a new insurance marketplace designed to make sure all Vermonters have access to “quality, affordable” health care coverage.

On Tuesday, Oct. 1, many Vermonters and small businesses will start taking the new system — triggered by the federal Affordable Care Act — for a test drive.

VUHS students seek peace and tolerance at annual rally

VERGENNES — Vergennes Union High School students this past Friday dedicated their ninth annual Peace One Day rally to the late Rep. Greg Clark, a city resident and teacher at Mount Abraham who they said was a strong backer of their annual rally for harmony at school, in homes and in the community as well as around the world.

Shashok makes 'Caroline's Dream' a thriving reality

MIDDLEBURY — Like many teens and young adults, Susan Shashok back in the day found herself in a lengthy battle against acne. With it came an arduous and unfortunately fruitless search for a product to improve her skin condition.

“I tried everything that I could,” recalled Shashok. “It just didn’t work for me. I had to use a lot of harsh chemicals, and it dried out my skin or made it all red.”

Porter Medical Center nurses to vote on forming a union

MIDDLEBURY — Porter Medical Center’s combined total of around 130 nurses could vote as soon as next month on whether to form a union.

“I am confident it has a good chance,” Porter Hospital RN Alice Leo, one of the union organizers, said on Monday. “Nurses are feeling good about this, that it is the right thing to do.”

Leo cited staffing concerns as the motivating factor behind the union drive. She said many nurses are concerned that some units are shorthanded.

Kunin kicks off new group dedicated to electing women in Vermont

BURLINGTON — Former Gov. Madeleine Kunin and other former and current state officials on Tuesday kicked off a new political advocacy group in Vermont, aimed at electing more women to office.

The group, called Emerge Vermont, is dedicated to recruiting and training Democratic women. It is a branch of Emerge America, a national organization that formed in California in 2002 and now operates in 14 states, including Vermont.

Starksboro couple teams up with Mount Abe to fight hunger

STARKSBORO — A Starksboro couple is spearheading an effort to send more than a quarter of a million meals to hungry children in Haiti, and is enlisting the help of students and student athletes at Mount Abraham Union High School.

Nancy and Greg Orvis are raising money for With Love From Vermont, a Chittenden County-based charity that reaches into Addison and Rutland counties, which sends food packages to targeted audiences in poor countries.

Middlebury to welcome Leggett, Hamlin into Hall of Fame

MIDDLEBURY — Every autumn the Middlebury High School/Middlebury Union High School Alumni Association honors graduates by inducting them into its Hall of Fame.

Janet Malzac Leggett and Robert Hamlin will be inducted into the Hall of Fame this Friday, Sept. 27, at the Middlebury Union High School football game against Champlain Valley Union High School.
