HUNTINGTON — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ and girls’ Nordic teams on Saturday competed at the Sleepy Hollow Nordic Center in a “pursuit race” that combined both of the sport’s disciplines, classic and freestyle skiing.
Competitors skied one 3-kilometer classic leg, stopped in a transition area to switch skis, then went back out to complete the race on a different 3K freestyle leg.
MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury dance team hosted its only home meet of the winter on Friday, Feb. 6, and posted its best finish in the Jazz competition, taking third in a close decision behind Mount Mansfield and Lamoille.
Mount Mansfield proved to be the evening’s big winner, prevailing in both of the disciplines the Cougars entered, Jazz and Hip Hop.
Mount Anthony won the third competition, Pom, edging Missisquoi and Burr & Burton in a tight, three-team duel.
MUHS took seventh in another closely bunched field in the Hip Hop discipline.
WESTPORT, N.Y. — Members of Addison County’s Vermont Fencing Alliance earned top finishes against fencers from Vermont, New York, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Canada at this past Saturday’s Groundhog Open in Westport.
Middlebury’s Will Nop earned the local club’s best result, taking first place in Youth Epee. New Haven’s Asher Kite and Middlebury’s Peter Wolosinski earned second and third places, respectively, in that event.
ADDISON COUNTY — In local high school boys’ basketball play, all on Monday, Middlebury won a key Lake Division game, but Vergennes was upset on the road and Mount Abraham dropped a home contest.
VERGENNES — Five Vergennes Union High School wrestlers placed on Saturday at Mount Mansfield’s Jason Lowell Tournament as the Commodores took fifth out of 18 teams competing.
Brandon Cousino led the way by winning at 170 pounds, edging Spaulding’s Sam Kuckuk in the final, 7-5.
Also for VUHS, Trevon Smith was second at 126, Kyle Kingsley took third at 113, Ethan Reardon was fourth at 132, and Ryan Paquin finished fourth at 182.

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College men’s basketball team won once in three recent tries, prevailing on Tuesday in a non-league home game after dropping two NESCAC road games this past weekend.
The Panthers are 16-6 overall, but just 3-5 in league play. They are tied for the eighth and final league playoff spot with home games this weekend on tap vs. first-place Trinity on Friday at 7 p.m. and third-place Amherst on Sunday at 2 p.m.
MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College men’s hockey coach Bill Beaney became just the 12th coach in NCAA history to earn 600 career wins when his Panthers defeated visiting Wesleyan on Saturday, 3-0.
Beaney’s teams’ mark of 600-257-59 over his 35-year career represents the most wins for an NCAA Division III mentor. Most of those victories have come during his 28 years at the helm of the Panthers, during which his teams have compiled a 514-181-51 record.
