WEST ADDISON — Lee Kayhart had a recurring dream that helped sustain him through the trauma and self-doubt that had enveloped him after a farming accident took both his arms 27 years ago.

That dream was to ride a bicycle. It’s an activity that most folks take for granted, but which seemed like a veritable Everest for someone with no hands to clasp handlebars.

Mosquitoes back for another bite

Posted on October 3, 2011 |

WEYBRIDGE — Some warm, wet fall weather has contributed to a late-season surge of pesky mosquitoes that has been harassing people in portions of Addison County.

Tom Baskett, chairman of the Lemon Fair Insect Control District (LFICD), confirmed the surge but said his district was unable to treat it because of the unavailability of state funds. The LFICD conducts drops of pesticides that kill mosquito larvae in the member towns of Bridport, Cornwall and Weybridge.

Bristol changes its annual police meeting

Posted on October 3, 2011 |
By Andrew Stein

BRISTOL — Residents of the Bristol Police District on Monday voted to move their annual meeting from its traditional May date to instead coincide with the March town meeting.

The change also means that voters will be moving from a meeting format where they can debate and change the proposed annual budget on the floor to one where the budget is warned and voted up or down by Australian ballot without the opportunity to tweak it at the meeting.

MODENA, ITALY — When members of Team U.S.A. returned on Sept. 16 from the fifth annual International Earth Science Olympiad in Modena, Italy, they brought home more medals than the Americans had previously won in the competition’s history.

Led by Mount Abraham Union High School physics teacher Tom Tailer and his wife, Beth, the team grabbed three bronze medals. Prior to this year, the U.S. team had only won one silver and one bronze medal in four years of competing in the national-team contests.

Guest editorial: Will it be chaos or repression?

Posted on October 3, 2011 |
By Haviland Smith

Clearly, Libya is stumbling to a final conclusion. We have, rightly or wrongly, played some role in the outcome. We have been involved in air support of the rebel troops on the ground and there are rumors that we have been involved in an advisory capacity as well.

But the extent of our involvement doesn’t really matter. What really matters is what is to come in Libya and the extent to which we as a nation believe that we should have a say in that outcome.

VERGENNES — The Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ soccer team on Saturday continued its revival season and made it a season sweep of county competitor Vergennes, winning 2-1 at VUHS.

The Eagles improved to 5-1-2. That number of wins equals the program’s combined total from 2009 and 2010.

Eagle junior striker Evy Jacobs, whose two first-half goals provided Saturday’s finishing touch, said talented new players and a collective desire to start winning has helped make the difference.
