Mount Abe's married athletic directors made job-share a success

BRISTOL — No matter how much people have enjoyed a job over the years, a time can come when a new direction looks like a good idea.

At least that’s how married couple Jeff and Mary Stetson explained their decision to step down this June from their unique 25-year partnership as Mount Abraham Union High School’s co-athletic directors.

Jeff, 58, and Mary, 55, who will still teach part-time and coach at Mount Abe, can readily offer highlights from their years sharing the AD job.

Improvements to Gran Fondo may attract record numbers to this weekend's bike ride

MIDDLEBURYThe third edition of the Vermont Gran Fondo bike ride, set for Saturday, June 4, will feature some significant changes from its first two years, and potentially many more participants.

Most significantly, cyclists will find a stretch of Middlebury’s Exchange Street transformed into a hub where riders can take advantage of a bicycle safety check the night before, find convenient parking and grab coffee on ride-day morning, and take a shower upon finishing.

Legion recognizes Bristol police officer as a top cop

BRISTOL — The Vermont American Legion has named Bristol police officer Josh Otey its Vermont Law Enforcement Officer of the Year.

“All the candidates were worthy of the award and recognition ... It had to be a hard choice for the committee in that they were all so deserving,” wrote Tom Scanlon, chair of the Legion’s Law and Order Committee in a letter to Bristol Police Chief Kevin Gibbs, notifying Gibbs that Otey had been selected for the award.

Middlebury College graduates get a big send-off

MIDDLEBURY — Five hundred and seventeen students from 43 states and 39 countries — backed by a throng of over 5,000 parents and well wishers — gathered under a blue sky Sunday to receive their diplomas and say good-bye to student life and begin the world.

Pipeline activists plan a demonstration in Addison County

ADDISON COUNTY — The activist group Rising Tide Vermont will hold direct action trainings in Starksboro this coming weekend and is planning a mass action in Addison County on Monday, June 6, to stop construction of Vermont Gas Systems’ natural gas pipeline.

Juice bar expands from Bristol to Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — Bristol-based Juice Amour will soon open their first location in Wolcott Plaza at 1396 Route 7 South in Middlebury. The space, most recently home to Carolyn’s Closet, is currently under construction with plans to open to the public the beginning of July.

Ways of seeing: Labels sometimes mask the deeper story

You might have seen in the news that citizens of Rutland are struggling with the prospect of resettling refugees from Syria into their community. I hope Rutlanders will find a way to work with the Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program (VRRP), and when Syrians arrive in central Vermont I hope I can personally reach out to help them resettle here.
