NEW YEAR’S EVE
There’s no need to travel far on New Year’s Eve, as Middlebury’s Town Hall Theater offers two completely different events to ring in 2015.
JERICHO — Host Mount Mansfield dealt the shorthanded Middlebury Union High School field hockey team a 6-1 defeat on Thursday.
The Cougars improved to 2-6-1, while the Tigers, playing without their starting center back and center middie due to injuries, dropped to 2-4-3. The loss also snapped the Tigers’ three-game unbeaten streak.
MMU took a 2-0 lead before a Tajah Marsden goal cut the lead to 2-1 at the half. But MMU pulled away after the break.

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High School field hockey team needed a second-half goal to earn a 1-1 tie with visiting Metro Conference foe Burlington on Thursday; but Eagles missed an opportunity to pick up points in the Division II standings by defeating a mid-pack D-I foe.
The Eagles’ record stands at 6-3-1 and in third place in D-II behind undefeated Rice and 8-2 Otter Valley, while Burlington (3-4-2) slipped past Middlebury into seventh place in D-I with the road tie.
POULTNEY — Senior running back Michael Winslow and junior quarterback John Winslow led the Otter Valley Union High School football team to a 65-13 victory over host Poultney on Saturday.
The Winslows did all their damage in the first half as OV took an insurmountable 44-7 lead in the Division III contest. Michael Winslow carried the ball 18 times for 187 yard and two touchdowns, and John Winslow connected on eight of 11 passes for 171 yards.
