Lewis Creek Farm lands USDA energy grant to build solar project

STARKSBORO — Lewis Creek Farm, one of Starksboro’s largest crop farms, is aiming to expand the already hefty solar energy portfolio in the small town.

At the end of last month, the USDA announced that its Renewable Energy for America Program (REAP) would fund 450 energy projects across the nation. The aim of the program is to help farmers and small rural businesses cut energy consumption and reduce costs.

Eight Vermont projects were funded, including one by Starksboro’s Hank Bissell, who runs Lewis Creek Farm.

Old Brandon High School auctioned

BRANDON — The old Brandon High School got another chance at life late last month when new owners snapped up the 96-year-old building for a paltry $20,000.

Sunny skies and warm temperatures greeted the roughly 20 people who attended the June 28 bank foreclosure auction on West Seminary Street, handled by Thomas Hirchak Company. Curious local residents outnumbered potential bidders 10 to one as the bidding got under way following a one-hour registration and inspection period of the gutted, three-story brick building.

Teen plans soccer tourney to raise AIDS awareness in Africa

MIDDLEBURY — Kelsey Smith has gotten a kick out of soccer ever since she was 5 years old. Now 14 and a standout player, Smith has decided to put her favorite sport to use to help save the lives of young people on the other side of the globe.

Smith is organizing an Aug. 5 soccer tournament in Middlebury that will raise money for AIDS and HIV awareness programs for youths in Africa.

Summer Escape: Open Water Swimming

MIDDLEBURY — Monday, July 2, brought this year’s Olympic swimming trials to a close. Audience members in Omaha saw some of the most decorated athletes in the world compete for the top three spots in each event, in hopes of taking them to London for the 2012 Olympic Games.

Antique pedal cars stolen from Addison home

ADDISON — Vermont State Police (VSP) are investigating a July 9 burglary at a residence off Elm Point Road in Addison that saw someone make off with three antique pedal cars.

Police said the 1950s-vintage pedal cars were stolen from the basement of the residence. State police did not specify how the culprit(s) got into the home.

Authorities have no suspects at this time.

On the throne: Berry cousins building outhouse race dynasty

BRISTOL —The New York Yankees of the 1950s, the Boston Celtics of the 1960s, the Montreal Canadiens of the 1970s, and now the Berry cousins of the present day — they are all dynasties of their own eras.

With their fourth consecutive victory in the Independence Day Bristol Outhouse Race, local residents Chris and Kevin Berry have established themselves as Addison County’s modern day athletic dynasty — the duo of cousins has owned the town’s Fourth of July outdoor toilet-racing scene since 2009.

Bristol Police Log: Animal cruelty check leads to drug charge

BRISTOL — Bristol police on June 21 responded to Main Street to check on a dog in a vehicle and cited Scott Martin, 35, of Winooski for possession of marijuana.

The officer asked Martin to crack his truck windows. As soon as he opened the truck door, Bristol police Chief Kevin Gibbs said, the officer was overwhelmed by the smell of marijuana.
