BURLINGTON — Vergennes Union High School senior Chris Castillo won the Division II triple jump, classmate Sebby Crowell placed in two events, and a Commodore boys’ relay team finished second to highlight the efforts of VUHS athletes at a Jan. 3 indoor track at the University of Vermont.
MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College men’s basketball team won twice recently as second-semester play opened to improve to 9-0 entering NESCAC play this weekend.
The Panthers will play at Bates on Friday and at Tufts on Sunday. Despite their record, the Panthers remain unranked, although they received votes in the Jan. 6 NCAA Division III poll.
On Jan. 2, the Panthers thumped visiting Salve Regina, 94-66. A 30-12 run in the final 10 minutes of the first half decided matters as the Seahawks dropped to 3-7.
PLATTSBURGH — The Middlebury College women’s basketball team won once in three recent outings as its second semester play opened. The Panthers are 7-4 heading into league play, which begins this weekend with home games vs. Bates at 7 p.m. on Friday and Tufts at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
On Tuesday, host Plattsburgh took control with a 15-2 first-half run on the way to a 79-58 win over the Panthers. The Cardinals led at the break, 40-22, and led by at least 20 for most of the second half.

ADDISON COUNTY — In high school basketball action earlier this week, the Mount Abraham girls and Vergennes boys won on the road, but the Eagle boys and Vergennes and Otter Valley girls dropped home games.

STOWE — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ hockey team blanked host Stowe on Monday, 9-0, to improve to 6-2 heading into a pair of road games later in the week.
The Tigers were set to play Rutland on Wednesday afternoon, and will visit Essex on Friday at 7:45 p.m. in a key Division I clash.
ELMIRA, N.Y. — The Middlebury College women’s hockey team returned to second-semester action on Jan. 3 by earning a 2-2 tie at Elmira.
The 5-2-1 Panthers entered the game ranked No. 4 in NCAA Division III, while the 9-1-1 Soaring Eagles — who defeated Middlebury earlier this season — were ranked No. 2.
The Panthers will skate at home this weekend versus Wesleyan on Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 3 p.m.
In a scoreless first period, both teams launched 13 shots on goal.
LAKE PLACID, N.Y. — The Middlebury College men’s hockey team opened second-semester play by splitting two games at the New Year’s College Hockey Classic, which the 3-5-2 Panthers hosted at the Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid.
The Panthers opened by defeating St. Michael’s, 2-1, on Jan. 2, but dropped the finale, 4-1, to Hobart on Saturday. The Panthers are on the road this weekend at Trinity and Wesleyan.
