MIDDLEBURY — It got uncomfortable at the end, but the Middlebury Union High School football team defeated visiting Division I rival Essex on Friday, 34-27, to improve to 6-0 this fall and move the program’s winning streak to 28 games.

The Tigers led by 34-14 with 4:12 to go, but the Hornets used an interception and an onside kick recovery to create some late suspense before Tiger senior Chase Messner intercepted Essex quarterback Eli DiGrande as time expired.

Opinion: Long-time donor receives assistance in time of need

Posted on October 5, 2015 |
By Monica L. Schaner

For years I paid it forward when I was able to work. I grabbed kids’ names off of Christmas trees and bought them everything on their list and then some, I paid for someone’s coffee, lunch, groceries, parts for their car, gas, put together Thanksgiving baskets, donated tons of dog and cat food to the shelters, giving people rides and the list goes on. Even with very little I have now, I’ve always tried to Pay It Forward somehow, but today I was surprised when a total stranger Paid It Forward to me.

Opinion: Green energy, views can coexist

Posted on October 5, 2015 |
By Peter Rothschild

Vermonters can feel proud that we are out in front on many environmental issues including climate change. But as the push for more renewable energy continues, choices among types of renewable energy have been made that may result in the unnecessary scarring of thousands of acres of our landscape.  Mercenary armies of solar developers, abetted by special interests, have flocked to Vermont to reap financial rewards from subsidies and Investment Tax Credits.

Editorial: How to stop the madness of gun violence

Posted on October 5, 2015 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

In the wake of the mass shooting at Umpqua Community College in Oregon last week, here are three facts that should shock America out of its reluctance to take action on gun control: an average of 92 gun-related deaths in America every day; since 1970, more Americans have died from guns than died in all U.S. wars going back to the American Revolution; more preschoolers are shot dead each year (82 in 2013) than police officers are in the line of duty (27 in 2013). Imagine, it’s more dangerous to be a preschooler in this country than a law enforcement officer.
