MIDDLEBURY — St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church officials are sizing up damage to the ceiling within the main worship hall of the historic building on Middlebury’s town green, in hopes of soon resuming regular services in that space.
VERGENNES — On Dec. 19 the Vergennes Opera House will host a CD release party for one member of the theater’s board of directors — Vergennes Union High School senior Matteo Palmer.
Palmer, who organized and played at a 2012 concert at the theater to benefit the Vergennes Opera House, next week will play two sets of music as he introduces his CD, “Out of Nothing.” He recorded the disc with the help of Grammy-winning New Age musician and Windham Hill Records founder Will Ackerman.
MIDDLEBURY — Visiting Winooski went on a decisive 11-4 run over the final four minutes of the third quarter on Saturday and then hung on for a 19-17 victory over the Middlebury Union High School girls’ basketball team despite not scoring a point in the fourth quarter.
SOUTH DUXBURY — Host Harwood pulled away in the second half to earn a 53-45 victory over the Vergennes Union High School girls’ basketball team on Saturday in the opener for both squads.
The Highlanders led by just one at the break, 26-25, but claimed the win with three players in double figures, including Jennifer James (17 points).
The Commodores’ K.C. Ambrose matched that game-high total with 17 points of her own, and Paige Coyle added nine for VUHS.
MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ hockey team picked up a pair of wins last week to improve to 4-0. The Tigers and also undefeated Northfield are dueling for first place in Division II.
On Wednesday, the Tigers topped visiting Rutland, 4-1. Timi Carone, Angela Carone and Julia Carone each scored in the second period to spark MUHS, and CareyAnne Howlett scored the final goal. Tiger goalie Baily Ryan recorded six saves.
ADDISON COUNTY — The Otter Valley and Mount Abraham union high school boys’ basketball teams opened with road losses on Saturday, while Vergennes saw its home opener postponed.
The Commodores’ Saturday game vs. Montpelier was moved to this coming Saturday, also at 11:30 a.m. Their opener will instead come vs. BFA-Fairfax at home on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Middlebury will also open at home on Tuesday at 7 p.m., when the Tigers will host Fair Haven.
MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ hockey team knocked off visiting Division II rival Woodstock, 5-2, this past Wednesday.
The Tigers improved to 2-1, good for a first-place tie in Division II with Mount Mansfield heading into weekend play. They are idle this weekend and will host D-I power St. Albans on Wednesday before visiting league rival Lyndon on Saturday. Woodstock dropped to 1-2 heading into the weekend.
