MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police launched an investigation into a suspicious fire at the construction site of Middlebury College’s athletic complex off South Main Street on Friday, May 2. Police said a group of people were seen running away from a piece of construction equipment that was on fire. Middlebury firefighters responded to put out the fire after police officer attempts with a fire extinguisher were unsuccessful.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Responded to a reported noise disturbance at a Seymour Street home on April 28. Police said they found multiple underage people drinking alcohol at the home. The investigation into the incident continues.

•  Investigated a report of a truck and trailer allegedly getting stuck in the Pulp Mill Bridge on April 28. Police said they found no such vehicle nor new damage to the historic covered bridge.

•  Questioned a man and woman on April 28 who were found to be in possession of some items that may have been stolen from a Merchants Row business on April 28. Police later arrested Jerry A. Dunbar, 25, and Alara L. Bourgeois, 20, both of Bristol, and cited them for possession of stolen property in connection with the case.

•  Got mental health assistance for a confused Cross Street resident on April 29.

•  Investigated a family argument on Seminary Street on April 29.

•  Responded to a domestic dispute at a Valley View residence on April 30.

•  Responded to a report of an out-of-control female at a Birchard Park home on April 30.

•  Investigated a complaint of overweight trucks using Lower Foote Street on April 30. Police made contact with one of the trucks and determined it indeed weighed 45,000 pounds more than the posted limit.

•  Received a report that some lacrosse sticks had been stolen from the Middlebury Union High School boys’ locker room on April 30.

•  Served a no-trespass order on a man who was suspected to have stolen some merchandise from Shaw’s Supermarket on Washington Street on May 1.

•  Responded to a domestic dispute at a Seminary Street residence on May 1. Police said the dispute was verbal and that the woman involved in the argument secured a temporary restraining order against the man.

•  Investigated a report of some youths playing in the middle of Seymour Street on May 1.

•  Received a report that someone had smashed a cake on the back window of a car parked in the Frog Hollow neighborhood on May 1.

•  Ticketed two youths who had been drinking alcohol on Hillcrest Road on May 2.

•  Were informed on May 2 of the recent theft of a cell phone from Middlebury College’s Starr Library.

•  Arrested Cameron Gelezinsky, 22, who is homeless, and cited him for unlawful trespass at a Court Street apartment building on May 2. Police said Gelezinsky had refused to leave the building when asked.

•  Received a report that a wallet had been stolen from the Middlebury College basketball court off South Main Street on May 2.

•  Were informed of the theft of backpack from a bench in the women’s locker room at Middlebury College Fieldhouse on May 2.

•  Investigated the theft of a welder’s helmet from a sealed shipping box that was sitting on the front porch of a Case Street residence on May 2. Anyone with any information on this case is asked to call Officer Kevin Emilio at 388-3191.

•  Assisted Middlebury Regional EMS with a man in cardiac arrest on Middlebury College grounds on May 3. (See related story on Carl Ciemniewski in this issue.)

•  Were informed that someone had stolen a credit card and cash from an individual at the Ilsley Library on May 3.

•  Received a report that someone had stolen four tires from a garage on Seminary Street on May 3.

•  Received some fireworks that had been located during Green Up Day cleanup efforts on Mary Hogan Elementary School grounds on May 3.

•  Checked on a homeless woman who had been sleeping in the Marble Works complex on May 3.

•  Responded to a report of a man leaving the Middlebury Short Stop on Court Street Extension without paying for two beers on May 3. Police were unable to locate the man.

•  Attempted to serve a temporary restraining order on a local man on May 4.

•  Conducted a death investigation at a Buttolph Drive home on May 4. Police said they found Terry Gibbs, 57, deceased inside the home. Authorities determined her death to be of natural causes. Gibbs was a longtime para-educator at Middlebury Union High School (see related story, this issue).

•  Provided traffic support for the annual Maple Ridge Run in the Middlebury area on May 4.

•  Assisted Middlebury Regional EMS in attending to a female Middlebury College student who had overdosed on pills in the College Street area on May 4.

•  Cited Michael Cordoba, 22, of Cornwall for driving with a criminally suspended license on North Pleasant Street on May 4.

•  Responded to a report of a man causing issues with door personnel at Two Brothers Tavern on Main Street on May 4. Police said the suspect had walked away upon their arrival.

•  Issued a warning to a person for violating the town’s open container ordinance on Shannon Street on May 4.

•  Arrested on May 5, on an outstanding warrant, a transient woman out of Burlington. Police said the woman, 31-year-old Kate Nicholson, was found in a car parked behind a garage on Washington Street.
