Donald “Butch” Shaw

MIDDLEBURY — Donald “Butch” Shaw, 85, a lifelong resident of Middlebury, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2009, at Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation, surrounded by his loving family.

Born March 13, 1923, at the family home in Middlebury, he was the fifth of six children born to Charles J. and Frances (Swenor) Shaw.

He was a graduate of Middlebury High School, where he lettered in three sports and was later inducted into the Middlebury High School Hall of Fame in 1996. He was captain of the hockey team.

He married Jourdaine Severy on April 6, 1946, at St. Mary’s Church in Middlebury.

He proudly served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WW II and was stationed in the South Pacific.

For over 35 years he was service manager for Brush Motors and later worked at G. Stone Motors until retirement. During retirement he was groundskeeper for the UVM Morgan Horse Farm, Weybridge.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Church.

He was a member of the Middlebury Fire Department for 65 years where he was a life member and served as assistant chief from 1962 until his death and as a lieutenant from 1955 to 1956. In addition he was a life member of the Addison County Firefighters Association.

He was first vice commander of the American Legion in 1954 and 1955. He was past president of the Small City Steppers Club.

He was an avid camper and snowmobiler. Butch enjoyed cooking with Nub Duclos for the Middlebury Firemen’s Summer Bazaar and spending time with his family.

Family members include Charles “Butch” Shaw, his wife Mary and their son Dana of Florence; Donna Patterson, her husband Skip and their sons Donald and Richard and his wife Michele of Middlebury; Robert Shaw, his wife Janet and their children, Jessica, Amanda and Ian of Bristol; David Shaw, his wife Wendy and their daughter Danielle of Weybridge; Patrick Shaw, his wife Lisa and their children Ben and Kimberly of Weybridge; two great-grandchildren, Zack and Nick Patterson of Maryland; one sister, Lucy Danyow of Middlebury; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Jourdaine (Severy) Shaw, on Nov. 10, 2004; two brothers, Buster and Lucius Shaw; and two sisters, Helen Shaw and Dorothy Moore.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Monday, Feb. 16, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Middlebury with Rev. Albert “Skip” Baltz as celebrant. Spring burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

To our dad: you have earned your angel wings — wear them with pride in your heart. We will miss you, Dad/Papa. Say hi to Mom for us.


Myron H. Goddard

MIDDLEBURY — Myron H. Goddard, 90, died peacefully at his son’s home in Vermont on Feb. 12, 2009. He was a lifetime resident of Hardwick, Mass., born Oct. 8, 1918, growing up at the family farm on Goddard Road and graduating from Hardwick High School. He played minor league baseball for a time before serving in the U.S. Army from February 1941 until January 1946 with the 55th F.A. Battalion, I Corp, Sixth Army in the Pacific Theater.

Upon returning home he married Edith Dennis of Wheelwright, Mass. To the couple two sons, Dale and Craig, were born.

Myron’s wife, Edith, died in 1982.

He is survived by his two sons, Craig and his wife Tammi, and Dale and his wife Cindy; and by Dale’s four children, Paris and his wife Mira, Pilar, Bow and his wife Shilo, and Tarpon.

For many years Myron has served his town on the planning board, in the historical society and with many community projects. He has truly been one of Hardwick’s “Town Fathers.”

A memorial service will be held in Hardwick in the spring. Donations in Myron’s memory may be made to Addison County Home Health & Hospice, PO Box 754, Middlebury, VT 05753, or the local hospice chapter in your community.
