VUHS seniors walk for veterans

The Vergennes Union High School Class of 2025 set a goal of raising $3,500 for its Senior Walkathon, which was held on a cool and mostly cloudy Thursday, Oct. 24, on behalf of the Wounded Warrior Project.

Emma Bryant and Christopher Robinson certainly had a noteworthy meet-cute.

Tamara Aunchman was a senior at Vergennes Union High School when she met a junior named Austin Brown in an engineering class at the Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center.

The MUHS girls’ and boys’ cross-country teams finished 3rd and 5th, respectively, in the D-II Cross Country Championships in Thetford on Saturday. Estella Laird was the top female in all divisions.

In a typically hard-fought duel on Saturday between the rivals, the host Eagles earned a 2-0 victory over the Commodores in what was the final regular season game for both squads.

The Division II Mount Abraham girls’ soccer team achieved its main objectives on Tuesday at Vergennes, playing crisply, passing the ball and defending well, and coming away with a 3-1 victory.

Burr & Burton took 1st place in both boys’ and girls’ races on Sept. 20 at the Middlebury Invitational cross country meet, but the host Tigers were 2nd.

The most successful teams at Vergennes Union High School in 2023 were arguably cross country and girls’ soccer, with the former taking fifth in Division II and the latter winning a playoff game for the first time in four years.

All four local high school golf teams were in action yesterday, and in three competitions they netted a medalist, a co-medalist, and a team tie for first place.

Cross-country runners from Middlebury, Mount Abraham and Vergennes competed at this past Saturday’s season-opening Essex Invitational meet, which drew high school competitors from all Vermont divisions.

The Vergennes Union High School boys’ soccer team opened on Aug. 30 with a 3-0 victory over visiting Lake Division rival Green Mountain Valley.

Grey Fearon, Spencer Gebo, Brody McGuire and Reese Paquette were nominated by faculty and staff based on leadership, scholarship, character, and loyalty and service to their school.

The Vergennes American Legion Auxiliary Unit 14 will sponsor Megan Mentzer, Tryphene Miguel, Sophia Johnson and Jing Williams when they attend Girls’ State  from June 23-28 at the Randolph Campus of Vermont Tech.

The high school careers of the Class of 2024 may have started under the cloud of the COVID pandemic, but, like many newly minted Vergennes Union High School grads, Calvin Gramling is putting that community experience in the rearview mirror and look ahead.
