Boys’ hoop teams come up short

Addison County boys’ basketball teams struggled late last week, as Vergennes dropped two home games and Middlebury and Mount Abraham each suffered road losses in their only outings.

The Middlebury Union High School girls’ basketball team won at Vergennes on Friday, Dec. 12.

Vergennes was the only winner as the local high school boys’ basketball season got underway. Mount Abraham opened with a pair of setbacks, and Middlebury lost in overtime on the road. 

Meet the 2025-2026 VUHS winter sports teams.

No. 2 seed VUHS relied on a gritty teamwide defense, sensational early saves from sophomore goalie Addie Smith, and well-struck goals from Ava Francis and Sophia James to defeat Peoples for the title.

The No. 2 seed Commodores struck first and last to earn a 2-1 victory over visiting No. 3 Stowe in Wednesday afternoon’s tense Division III semifinal. The title game is Saturday.

The local high school teams are playing their final week of the regular season before heading into the playoffs.

The Middlebury Union High School girls’ cross-country team finished seventh among 15 scoring teams at this past Saturday’s U-32 Invitational, while the Tiger boys were 10th out of 17 scoring teams. 

The Mount Abraham, Vergennes and Middlebury union high school boys’ soccer teams each split two outings in recent action.

The Mount Abraham-Vergennes football team’s explosive offense and hard-hitting defense carried them to a 56-0 win over Windsor High School on Saturday.

The Mount Abraham-Vergennes Cooperative football team on Saturday rolled past winless Missisquoi, 68-0.

Even with injured or absent players, the Mount Abe boys’ soccer team defeated Vergennes, 3-0, on Tuesday.

The Vergennes Union High School girls’ soccer team rolled to a big win this past week, defeating visiting Oxbow, 8-1.

 The three Addison County high school boys’ golf teams and the MUHS girls’ golf team all saw action last week.

Five Vergennes Union High School rising seniors have been chosen to attend Green Mountain Boys’ State, which will be held June 22-27 on the campus of Norwich University in Northfield.
